mk1its
Guys Tried to do the decat yesterday and the downpipe bolts are bloody awkward to get to without a ramp, and I'm sure even with! I used a knuckle joint which must have put too much sideways pressure on the bolts?? Anyway, the first nut came off OK ish however as you can see from the pic, the threads were pretty much trashed: The second nut snapped and you can see here that the bolt is twisted in the nut: Then when trying to remove the third bolt pictured here, I cannot get enough force onto the bolt to even budge it: So all in all, a bloody disaster really. I'm guessing I've now got to remove the entire turbo/manifold setup so if anyone has a guide for this, a link would be great. I'll also presume that I need to purchase new nuts and bolts for the downpipe to decat? Is it common for these to be so bloody awkward! Any help appreciated guys; cars stuck on the driveway on ramps right now....
TuneR
I used one of those angled things in a rachet set, bottom left of pic below. This was after soaking them each day for a week in WD40, they are an awful ba$tard though. Im not sure how you'd replace the bolt stud though, you'd probably have to take everything off if you cant hammer it off after taking the cat off. http://76.my/Malaysia/17pcs-t-handle-ratchet-socket-extension-joint-tools-set-c17-1008-17-aaronngu77@1.jpg
listy
Maybe drill out the remains of the stud and replace it with a bolt?
supra_ufo
I did this on my back mate, PITA. I used some long extensions and a strong arm? (the one you use to take wheels off) Also heating them very hot would be a very good idea too. Search for removing turbos and you will find some PDFs explaining. Scooter
If there is only one bolt remaining can you not force a wedge in the undone side and effectively bend/lever the cat away slightly to get a mini hacksaw blade to cut the last stud. You still have a major pita with the sheared stud and this cut one but with the cat out of the way perhaps the studs can be drilled out. If not, it's all got to be removed.... I'll try tonight with the knuckle joint to see if this gives me any extra room... - - - Updated - - - Maybe drill out the remains of the stud and replace it with a bolt? I think that's definitely wise....studs are great, but shit when they snap!! In their defense, they've probably been in there 20 years lol... I'm also on my back, bloody awkward as hell! Maybe its worth running the engine for a while although I guess this will just heat the studs also, causing them to expand.... I don't think I'd get anything in there without risking snapping the other stud to be honest.....I can't even budge the 3rd bolt....I'll try with a knuckle joint tonight and see if that helps..... It's definatey going to need drilling out....what a bitch....

Guest Supra_95
Anyone know what size these nuts are for the jap models? I'm in need of one lol
Chris Wilson
You need to take the turbo elbow off now, and get the remains drilled out on a milling machine. Don't try and drill t out in situ, things will go from bad to worse... Removing the elbow will be challenging on your back.
