Best way to reduce drone? Slightly reduce noise?

I have an RSR exhaust an I love it BUT when on long trips the drone can be quite annoying. This only happens to be between 65 - 80mph which isn't ideal for long journeys! In the past it had a bung stuck in which was great but I just can't be arsed dealing with bungs and it does sound a bit rubbish with one in.

Can anyone recommend anything to cure this? Would dynamat in the boot help? Any exhaust mods I could do? It is currently double decat.

Thanks in advance!!

Go 85mph

Hth :D

What do you think I have been doing?! :D

Exhaust butterfly's/electronic exhaust valve :D

^yeah as SPG said.

Suprasteveo has one and it works a treat.

It's on a pull lever type thing so is semi adjustable too.

Thinking of this route but will this have any effect on the turbo's?! Won't cause back pressure or anything like that will it?

Buy a Slayer CD. Turn stereo up.

I think I should mention occasionally I have my wife & little baby daughter in the car :D

I had an RSR on my Supe, with 2nd decat. took out rear seat and dynamatted the whole of the rear of the supe, took a couple of rolls. Worked a treat. Also helped that I am as deaf as a post.
Thanks Max, I might try the dynamat process just to decrease cabin noise.

Here you go. :)

That's exactly what this device does.

I can bring it to JAE for you to trial.

Thanks David but I'd like to avoid any bungs or anything else fitted to the end, quite like the look my exhaust just not the drone.

I recommend getting a Tanabe ;)

(It's beautiful how quiet mine is off boost!)

I remember hearing yours! I might have to have a better listen next week.

Either swap it for a quieter exhaust or get a 2nd silencer welded into the mid pipe.

:yeahthat: Easy enough to get a 2nd baffle/expansion box fitted.

Thanks guys, will look into this option.

Ear plugs :) Certainly the cheapest solution.

Certainly the cheapest :D

Can't you get a bung I've got the 5zigen one and it looks pretty much the same (it said rsr on the ad when I got the car) and mine came with a bung you could have if you want

Avoiding the bung option Chris, I have had two now... One fell out on the dual carriageway & I spent ages in the bushes looking for it and I have no idea where the other is now. It is just very fiddly & messy, and ideally want something to either quiet the drone or have a switch to flick between.

Where does one get these from?

They pop up on here every now and again.

Always seem to be a few on eBay too

Had a quick look and found this, the video seems pretty good!

Might have a chat with Lee as his done a few of these and see what he can sort out.

Looks good but I think that's more for the opposite affect, making a quite exhaust loud! I'm sure I watch a vid once of a HKS built skyline with the electronic butterfly valve and worked quite well but when looking on the website can't find it so must of stop making it. Would Lee be able to come up with anything like that do you think?

The y pipe is designed so you can have quiet and loud exhaust, but if you take off the valve, and use it in a single exhaust pipe, it will quieten it down.

Suprasteveo's is awesome and I will end up getting one one of these days

The downside is that it'll add quite a big restriction, an extra silencer would quieten the exhaust without the added restriction and should cost less.

I've got an exhaust control valve. Car sounds less noisey than my diesel at 60mph.

It will create back pressure while closed. But that won't matter if your cruising. It's more responsive lower RPM as well. Turbo won't actually spin up with it closed. Makes me wonder if it saves fuel due to restricting fuel.

You can't open a siliencer or muffler. Hodge had a ECV for sale back along not sure if he sold it though.

Get a larger ECV than your pipe though. A 3" pipe should have a 4" ECV, otherwise you will create a reduction in flow. Just get a reducer either side and your sorted. Pull a lever and the noise is reduced. Open it again and its back, your can't do that with mufflers.

Jetex UK do a good range of large bore stainless steel silencers, you'd need to check how much clearance you have underneath the car.

Living in London I have currently have good ground clearance so wouldn't want to compromise that... I know Nic, have my cake and eat it!!

Though thanks for the link, I think it might be able idea now to get it checked out by an exhaust specialist.

My bad, on re-reading it now I understand! Thanks for the link Nic.
