Johnny176
Evening Guys, There's a good few threads on ignition timing but I couldn't find any which mentioned an easy enough way to actually do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a quick how to? I know how to use the timing gun but I'm unsure of the best way to go about it on the supra engine. If there is a difference between the 2, I have the 2JZ GTE engine Thanks
Swampy442
First question is why do you need to do it? It cant be adjusted on the GTE. I havent got a car handy to get pics, but on top of the plug that connects to the ignitor unit theres a flap that can be opened. Inside this plug theres a load of wires, but also 1 wire thats longer than the rest, clip your timing lead onto that and away you go. I know on other Toyota engines if you bridge the ports TE and E1 in the diagnostic port, this obviously puts in in diagnostic mode, but also sets the timing to an arbitrary point, like 10 degrees btdc or something. Guest Roger NE
Yes you need to link the two pins on the Diagnostic Port to stop any Advance/Retard on the ignition, so you can set it at the "Static Timing" point. And clip your Timing Light's sensor onto plug number 1 (at the front of the engine)

Johnny176
Thanks Swampy, I have an aftermarket ECU and I just wanted to see if the engines ignition timing was the same as what the ECU thinks it is
