J-Meiser
Hello! I would like to remove the whole exhaust system and leave the manifolds/headers on the engine as I don't need the rest of it. However, as the title states, the bolts on the exhaust of my Soarer are heavily rusted/corroded and I am having trouble removing them. WD40 is proving useless at present and the bolts round-off at will. At present, clearance is at a bit of a premium, so I am hesitant to try and get my gas torch under there but if I have to, I will find a way to do so. Can anyone offer any suggestions to how to get the system off the car without me having to cut it up with a hacksaw? Thanks!
Dnk
Small angle grinder, die grinder with 2" diameter slitting disc ?
straightsix
When removing mine (when doing the V8 Supra), I cut the bolts/studs with a dremel. Some snapped off while using an extractor. After the downpipes were off, I removed the headers, then drilled the studs out so I could fit a new stainless nut and bolt to secure the downpipe. It made it a lot easier for future removals. garethr
Try some proper penetrating fluid, like Plus Gas. Tighten the nuts until the studs shear and sort it when the engine is out. Grinder. Nut splitter. Edited September 4, 2013 by garethr (see edit history)
J-Meiser
Thank you all for the advice! I had not heard of Plus Gas before but I now have a can on order for this and future jobs. I'll let you know how I get on
Shane
J, make sure the socket you are using turns on the flats of the nuts and not the points, also you can buy one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laser-Tools-0296-Bolt-and-Nut-Removers-Stud-Extractor-1-2-Drive-Tool-Garage-A-/350650412824?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item51a464af18 They work a dream on knackered nuts so long as you have room to get it in. Otherwise these are good, but not as good: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IRWIN-5PC-BOLT-GRIP-NUT-REMOVER-EXPANSION-SOCKET-SET-/400508980626?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item5d40320d92 Edited September 5, 2013 by Shane (see edit history)
