Removing the Charcoal Canister

listy

Recommended Posts

Before people say it, there is no DIFINITIVE how to for removing the charcoal canister, I have just spent the last hour searching. The mkiv.com link no longer seems to work either.

Now, if anyone has the ability to make a "How To" including pictures of what to do with what pipe, it would be appreciated. It could also be made into a sticky thread in the FAQ's too ;)

I've seen different versions of how to do it, but not one of them is conclusive.

Now, I know there are 3 pipes.

Some people don't know what pipe does what, hence the request for pictures. ;)

I did find that thread, but for someone as simple minded as myself, found it of little use, as in that thread, there are pictures of two ways to do it, and not a "that is the way" picture.

I know your post says cap two pipes, and leave the other to vent, but there is no confirmation. As much as I know you know your stuff David, confirmation from others would be appreciated, otherwise I can't sticky it ;)

Mine's all long gone, tank vent pipe is removed and blanked at tank and drain pipework completely removed.

When you find a pic of a cannister, the vacuum pipe is the small one at the top from manifold, the tank vent is the larger one at the top and the drain is another small one at the bottom.

I always though the pipe coming from the tank needs to be kept venting??

Ive blocked the small vacuum hose running from the inlet area (still waiting confirmation if i can use this for my bov or boost gauge)#

The line from the tank has a silicone hose on it going into the wing area to vent

The part that was at the bottom ive just left as it was

I vented the pipe coming from the tank also, took the steel one from under the car out and put a hose and filter from the tank under the rear subframe. The other two are removed/ blocked.

Have had no fuel smell since, and no pressure in fuel tank.

yeah mate one underneath people forget to mention that 1 :)

ill let you decide what to do with that 1 :D

but from what i can see in the pic

1 is the breather

2 and 3 block off

hard to tell from the photos but the one that breathes is the one that goes down and under from the top

also the little filter part under the canister is that fine to use on the breather pipe?

what i would like to know is , does anyone know to a vented cap that will fit? because couldnt we fit one and block the venting pipe from the tank?

listy, you can be my hero and test it out first then post some pictures up :D

I have been thinking to do this for a while but I aint completely sure how to and also reading a few threads saying that you can smell fumes inside the car?

Don't leave it to vent in the engine bay, route it into the arch and connect it to the existing 'vent pipe', essentially just bypassing the charcoal canister.

Just a quick one - besides the aesthetic values, why do people remove this? o.O

Mainly just to clean the bay up, it doesn't serve any real purpose, it was put there purely for decreasing 'evaporating emissions' by filtering the fuel vapors and putting them back into the intake.

What's so complicated about removing it and blanking/removing the pipes?

The tank vent-pipe should not be left open, the fuel system is designed to operate with 2 psi tank pressure and the fuel cap is a 2 psi pressure relief valve.

It's not complicated, but when people are saying to do different things, I don't want to touch it until I know exactly what I need to do.

just want to bump this david because ive read that the gas cap is vented, but it's got a check valve in it that only lets air IN the tank, not out.

is this right?

Sorry for the thread hijack, but can someone just confirm for me the following please.

One of the hoses from the canister goes to a pipe on the side of the intake plenum, I have blocked that. ( correct? )

Then there is one that attaches to a hard line that runs all the way around the back of the engine and into the hard vac line above the stock turbo's, ive remove that pipe completely, and just blocked the end of the hard vac line ( Correct? )

Which just leaves a smaller pipe that looks like it disappears down under the car towards the back, Can this be blocked?

And finally once the canister is removed, it leaves a check valve and bracket, i have unbolted the bracket, but there is a hose still attached underneath which i cant really get at? Any clues if this is left open/blocked.

I have pics of what I did with that pipe. :)

Tank on left going in, U.K. spec 80 litre, tank on right just taken out, 70 litre J spec.

The hose on the plastic breather union has a small bolt in it with a dod of silicone and put the clip back on, I then removed the pipe to front which made space to route my water/meth pipe inside the under car trunking.

I really didn't want to start another boring charcoal canister thread so il hijack this one. rather than removing I'm looking into re-installing mine but it only has 2 ports unlike the others Iv seen which have 3, does it matter which way the vac hose and the tank hose go on the canister??
