Water loss

Hi all. I have a 1993 non turbo supra vvti and it's using a lot of water. I put a new radiator in and new top and bottom radiator hoses and a new thermostat but it keeps using water. It uses around 2 liters every 3 days or so. Any help or ideas will be welcome thanks

At the min it's just a cheap brand coolant and as for ratio ain't got a clue on that on. I see it as long as it has it in then it's all good lol. Didn't think having the wrong ratio could make you lose water.

Check for leaks and if you can't find any get a sniff test done for exhaust gas in the coolant

 

Check the passenger foot well incase the matrix has a leak but 2 litres in such a short time

should be pretty obvious as the system only holds just short of 10

 

Was it okay before you changed the rad and hoses ?

Had a sniff test done that past. No gases in the coolant at all. Inside the foot wells are bone dry. And I can't see no leaks at the front of the engine or around the pipes or water pump. All the heater pipes are getting hot the fan is working. The heater in the car blows hot air out and I can not smell any gases thought the heater.

It has a mother bottle for coolant only. The problem started about 4 months ago I put the new radiator it about 4 days ago. So it's a on going problem really.

It can only be one of a few things

 

It has a leak somewhere

 

It is losing it via the combustion cylinders

 

Block or head has a crack

 

Coolant is pushed out the rad via the cap when hot to the expansion tank

but not drawing it back in when it cools

 

Did you fit a new stock pressure rad cap ?

as josh said... common places to leak on the na... and you cant always see it.....

 

core plug on the back of the waterpump housing, the 2 pipes from engine to bulkhead/matrix.... where they clamp to the engine mainly....

 

best to get it on a ramp, run it while its in the air and inspect it for leaks.... to loose that much water, it must be a leak...if it was a hg problem, it would run right for long periods....

It loses it out the tank and the radiator. So all water and coolant are being lost as for the coolant level getting higher and lower I don't no. It has the standard radiator cap on it.

If there is an engine leak then the level in the radiator might drop while the engine is cold, and certainly will when it is hot (but you can’t check the level in the rad when its hot). When the engine cools it should draw coolant in from the expansion tank to replace the lost coolant, so the level in the tank will drop when the engine is cold, but the level in the rad should be full. This will carry on until the engine has lost so much coolant that there isn’t enough in the expansion tank to replace it, at which point the expansion tank will run dry.

 

If you top everything up (rad and tank) then get the car nice and hot and then park up you should be able to see if the levels in the expansion tank are behaving correctly. Then you can check the rad and expansion tank again after it has cooled down. That may help you pinpoint where the leak is coming from.

 

Normal behaviour is:

Check before test / cold: Rad full and tank up to full mark.

Hot: Tank above full mark.

Cold: Tank back down to full mark. Rad full.

It does over heat only when there is no water or coolant in the system. I only let that happen the once I always keep a load of water in the boot. Some days the rad is full and the tank empty. Some days it's bang on as in rad is full and tank is on full mark. Some days rad empty and tank on full mark.

Are you topping with just water?

As you have mentioned water several times so just checking.

Water in the rad and coolant in the tank. It's starting to cost more to keep it cool than it is to run lol.

 

Right, the water could be boiling off.

 

Drain the whole system completely, then top up with the coolant and water mixed.

 

As said the coolant from the expansion tank only gets drawn in when it's cooled down.

The water will most likely be boiling and evaporate.
