hodge
Can someone tell me how much of the subframe has to be removed to drop the lower sump off. I've fitted an extended sump to the car and if I'm honest I'm sick to death of catching it. Odds are I'm going to put a hole in it at some point and trash my engine, so I'm going back to stock. It's just the bottom sump I need to remove though, top sump is all good. Cheers John
Lee P
You need to drop the whole subframe but not all the way out
TheTurtleshead
Might be worth disconnecting a few things, undoing the engine mounts then whacking a crane on it to lift it a few inches as well.. Gotta be well easy then.. You might just get away with that actually, haven't tried it personally but then you wouldn't have to reset your front Geometry..as Removing the rear section of the front subframe, (IIRC) also means you remove the rearmost adjuster bolts on the lower arms. TBH loosening any mounting bolts on the subframe would make me want to have the geo reset. God it's been ages since I played with a supra! hodge
You need to drop the whole subframe but not all the way out Just loosening the bolts and dropping it down or removing them and supporting it with a jack? I've got an engine brace bar to hold the engine that's no problem at all. I've just been under and by the looks of it, if I remove the rear section it looks like the sump will come straight out. If its just the oil pan, then just removing the rear section of the front subframe is enough. I only had to remove the whole subframe to remove the upper part of the sump. I'm going to try and do a bit of a how-to as I go, to help other members who need to do this in the future.
Lee P
Use an engine support bar, you will have to take the bolts out to drop it far enough (so will need supporting) but you won't have to disconnect steering.

Yeah that's what I meant when I said engine brace. Got 1 of those. I'll give it a go Friday.
listy
Yeah I supported mine with an engine crane. I found it easy, so you John will have it done in 5 minutes

listy
How long did the job take you start to finish bud? Two days on and off, as I had to replace my oil pump, and one of those days was Father's Day, so I only worked a couple of hours in the morning. Just to do the oil pan I'd guess an hour total, maybe an hour and a half depending how easy it goes back on. I found the best way is to loosely put one sides bolts back in, then that gives the manoeuvrability to get the other side in, then torque them up. I've done an oil pump change before but wasn't sure I'd be able to take less off just for the oil pan. I'll update as I go. I'm happy with only taking a couple of hours that's for certain. We tried to do the pump with just taking the rear section out, but the upper sump wouldn't fit through the gap. The oil pan had plenty of room. Lets just hope the subframe bolts come out ok. They don't look too bad to be fair.
