BPU Question

Guys

In an aim to get the car to BPU level, I've already purchased a decat with restrictor ring (from a member from here so I'm sure it's fine). I do however still need the following:

- Fuel Cut Defender

- Uprated fuel pump

- Colder Grade Spark Plugs

Now I've not mechanically touched the Supra yet but I need to check whether the previous owner had any of these parts fitted.

- Spark plugs I can check easily.....and I replace with Iridium IK22 or NGK BCPR7ES (which is better and any recommended sellers on here?)

- Where would I check for a fuel cut defender and if I don't have one, where would I buy one?

- Updated fuel pump. Do I need to remove the tank and the pump to check for this or is there another way to check? Again, if I don't have one, any recommended sellers on here?)

I'll also want a AFR gauge and Boost gauge. Again, any recommended sellers on here?

Thanks for any help; be good to get these parts assembled and then find a garage I can trust to complete the work. Garage 786 has been recommended.

Mark. :)

+1 to garage 786, I think they are quite close to you aren't they? Or there's Kerion ( a trader on here) who I believe could fit and supply the parts for BPU or alternatively there's Whifbitz in Enfield but probably a bit far for you I would also suggest budgeting £300 for a decent boost controller oh and if you want to go full BPU, you'll need to take both cats out and fit something like a Blurz Nur Spec exhaust (although probably not the best recommendation if you want something quiet)

Hope that helps

It does help, thank you.

Garage786 do seem to have a good reputation and yes, Leicester is 20mins away so taking the car back for any issues would mean it'd be a benefit, not top be pessimistic. I'll have a look for Kerion (is that his sign on name?) on here now.....

I'm familiar with some performance parts and I've had an Apexi AVC-R on my 300ZX, is that also classed as a Fuel Cut Defender or is that a separate device? Is there a device that can control the fuel and boost? For the Scooby we had an EcuTek system that seemed to do everything I believe. Clearly showing the gaps in my knowledge here lol.....

Any recommendation for brand names for all these parts would be great......need to compile my shopping list... :)

Iirc the gizzmo ibc can control the boost and fuel cut, but is a little more difficult to set up.

Thor fcd's are often regarded as one of the best, but getting thin on the ground, I used one from HKS.

If you cen change the spark plugs without needing mollycoddling all the way through, and can solder a little there's nothing really stopping you bpuing the car by yourself.

I'm sure there is a sticky somewhere in technical on how to do it, and most manuals are online for boost controllers.

Remember to fit a 1st decat too, and for the afr gauge you'll need to have a boss welded into the second decat.

I'd go to a local garage that doesn't charge high rates and get anything you

can't do done there, such as exhaust and de cat fitting which is much easier

on a ramp.

The rest is easy and diy if you can twirl a spanner and do simple wiring.

I'd get a set of coil pack connectors before you change the plugs unless

you know they've been changed as these go very brittle and tend to

fall apart.

Fit new crossover breather pipes as well as they also go rock hard, its

much easier to just replace them, these go between the two cam covers.

Thanks for the info.

I'll give the BPU mods a go myself as you say, it doesn't sound too difficult.

The decat I bought is a straight through all in one system....and it has I presume a lambda sensor plugged in - I am a little worried about the fact that the connector is loose inside...it arrived like this... :(

Great advice, thank you. Do you have a pic of which pipes you're referring to?

I did some pics on the fuel pump change a while ago mate - don't need to take the tank off, but if you do a search it should come up :)

Thanks mate, I'll have a look through your previous posts..... ;)

Good advice on the coil pack connectors. I changed my plugs yesterday, and 3 of the connectors fell to bits. I now need to source replacements, but have done a 'temporary' fix to keep the car working :)

Are the plugs available from Toyota?

Yes but would be cheaper and easier to give Paul a ring at whiffbitz he does them

I don't have a picture of them but they fit here where i've put the red lines, as soon as

you remove the plastic top cover they will be very obvious

While changing these i'd replace the cam cover seals as well as they will

also be very hard and possibly on the verge of leaking unless they

have been replaced, along with the two main seals there are 16 seal washers

you should replace at the same time.

If you do these be careful torquing up the bolts as the cam covers can crack

quite easily and are a very low torque figure around 8 nm

The sensor in the pic is a cat temperature sensor, it activates the cat overheat warning light. Just snip of the wiring and leave it, it'll make no difference.

The worst BPU job is getting rusted exhaust bolts off, if they are badly corroded get the work done at an exhaust fitters, either way you'll need new nuts, bolts and gaskets.
