Wez
Hey All, I now have some replacement driveshafts and wondered if there are any guides or tips / tricks to swapping them out, I also picked up some new diff seals at the same time as one of them has been leaking for a while. mwilkinson
Wez, it's a really easy job, especially if replacing the whole length as with the central bearing released there is plenty of flex to get it off. I think mine took a matter of about an hour to get off and the new one on. Again just have a trolly jack ready for the diff. No Idea about the seal changes, but I assume you will be removing the whole diff to do this. Only complication would be if your a UK spec with the diff cooler. I was hoping it could all be done with the diff in place and the car on rear axle stands
mellonman
they are easy with diff in place , its is biolted up you know iirc wheel off cetre pin and nut off undo the torques bolts at the diff (i think you may have to undo control arms to let hub move enough) hit with hammer to get it out of diff pull it out of hub and slide in new, it is easy i done mine with just a jack and hand tools Edited July 11, 2013 by mellonman (see edit history)

Al Massey
I have just removed driveshafts, diff and prop shafts from one car and fitted to my other shell. One driveshaft nut bent my torque wrench and snapped the square drive as it was solid. But managed to sort another out and the rest was very simple and easy to do
Wez
Good point actually, whats the torque rating for all nuts etc when replacing them?
Iky
Is it easy to change the seals?
mwilkinson
Sorry Wez, I read that as the prop shaft for some reason and not the drive shafts. Just as easy, although are the bolts that hold the drive shafts to the diff flanges torque to yield? I replaced all mine with new when these were swapped. As above you will need to create some play otherwise you may struggle to get them out from the hub as the splined section is quite long. Swampy442
Just to let you know, it might be a total bitch, I was going to take the shafts off an Aristo, and even with a 4' jesus bar the hub nuts wouldnt budge :/

Oh and another bump with ref the seals? Edited July 11, 2013 by ManwithSupra (see edit history)
Al Massey
Do you reckon a 640lbft impact wrench will be able to do it? Oh and another bump with ref the seals? Maybe, I used a 320nm torque wrench and it broke
fastcar
I used a 450NM electric impact wrench and got the hub bolt off no probs. you will need a 10mm hex wrench for the 6 drive shaft bolts that connect the drive shaft to the diff. But as said its and easy job just take your time with it.
markssupra
You may find that the splined end of the driveshaft has welded itself inside the hub, and no amount of persuasion will make it move, just my 2p
pedrosixfour
Maybe, I used a 320nm torque wrench and it broke You were using a torque wrench to OPEN the hub nut? You do realise to undo some fasteners could take many times the recommended tightening torque? As for the oil seals, if memory serves it shouldn't be a particularly tough job, depending on access of course. Getting seals to start straight is always the fun part, a nice clean block of hardwood bigger than the diameter of the seal you're trying to fit is a handy thing to have, that and a big sweet hammer! Yes I realise that, and I've never had a problem removing the nuts before when changing hubs the two times before. Just this one nut decided not to budge and break my torque wrench
