Jamesy
Hey hey! I am looking for a place that is able to re-chrome a set of chrome alloy wheels please... I have asked a couple of places and they dont do it, saying getting the original chrome off is a bit tricky without the right machine. Anyone know a decent place that undertakes this work please? TheTurtleshead
There is a seriously good chroming/plating firm near me, they're always maxed out so you might wait a while. I shall ask, although they may ask for some pictures of the pitting that they have before they will quote. (That's if they can do it!) Dnk
I use a guy in B'ham but to date he's only done motorcycle parts for me but they have been first class This is not a cheap process because they have to strip the old plating inc the nickle/copper plate that's under the chrome then they would be re polished then be re nickle/copper plated and re polished then the final re chrome I'd be surprised if they would be much under £200 per wheel if he can do them. Mario
If you run out of options, isn't it possible to get the old chrome profesionally removed and settle for an mirror finish polish which you can maintain yourself?

Jamesy
Ok little update i can only find the company above, Ashford, that will remove the chrome and undercoat so i can send them off to Ibrar to get them chrome painted... thing is Ashford want like £360 to just do their bit, plus then Ibrar - makes it VERY expensive little exercise. Anyone else know of anywhere? Dnk is kindly checking out a couple of places for me also...

garethr
This is interesting. Perhaps the problem is that it's not possible to do a good job without specialized equipment (which nobody in the UK has because chromed wheels just don't work in our climate ) http://www.chromerestorationspecialist.co.uk/faq/ Is it triple plated? Yes, parts are copper primed before nickel and chrome plating. In some cases we use a duplex nickel process. Can you chrome on alloy? Yes. Aluminium is a difficult material to chrome. If it has been previously chromed and is peeling it can be even more difficult. It may be worth considering having it in polished aluminium. It can look just like chrome, but without the hassle! Do you chrome alloy wheels? No, the reason is they need to be plated on special jigs. These jigs allow the chrome to plate evenly, so you have an even deposit from the outside edge of the rim through to the centre. Without this you would have a high build up on the outside edge and on thickness in the centre. This creates a problem because the edge will be susceptible to cracking if touched by a tyre lever or kerb and the centres will corrode very quickly.
