Knocking on the front at very low speed and slow stop start

As above. I noticed a knocking the other day and had a good look/play as I thought one of the front bushings or ball joints had gone. I couldn't find any play so took it to a friend with an MOT station and we had it over the pit and again couldn't find any play anywhere. The only time we could get it to knock was when I was slowly rolling into the bay (where you could hear a bit of muted clunking) or with the front jacked up and applying the brake when spinning the wheel and also when we put it on the roller and and pulsing the brake pedal, both of these which gave a bit of a clunk. So it pointed to the brakes (UK bigger brakes). we checked the bolts and everything was tight and again couldn't feel any play anywhere. When I got home I took the brakes off, pads out, gave them a check over and couldn't find anything then put them back on, everything felt rock solid. It seems too noisy for pad chatter so I'm stumped!

Any help advice greatly welcomed?

Subframe bolts, 17/19mm ones some recessed quite deep up in the aluminium part of the subframe and some not far in from the sills.

Also possibly engine mounts, check for clearance on these and also if facelift grab the lower metal cup and check for rotational 'play'

Have something similar myself after a spirited drive today.

Took some air after hitting a hump back bridge at speeds, and now have an occasional 'clunk' sound from the o/s rear wheel area.

Need to investigate more tomorrow.

Body in the boot no doubt, open boot and remove... memo to self remember the key for the boot.

it could be the anti roll bar drop links, if they come undone easily, you cold disconnect anti roll bar and tie up out the way and try that? but it does sound like a brake fault, have you got the bits in that push the pads up so as not to move up slightly when braking, if you see what I mean?

I'll have to get it back over the pit to check this but it does sound feasible and worth checking either way!

Sometimes aftermarket pads don't fit the calliper perfectly. When you apply the brake they slide backwards and forwards depending on direction of travel.

Are you running a std pad?

Yep standard pads

We couldn't find any play, movement in the drop links or any ball joints/ bushings. I think all the parts are there, but no not sure what you mean is it the metal backing plates with the lip on?! The brakes have been on for at least 6 months, have not had a problem until last few weeks and pads have very little wear

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorted at last... I checked the subframe bolts and engine mounts and all fine. Took the brakes off again and cleaned up (again), refitted and still the same problem. I thought I would have one last look and I found the problem - loose spacer bolts, this could have been very dangerous, checked the other side and the same. Tightened everything back up and all back to normal. My wheels are only 2-3 mm off accepting the bigger brakes and I like them on the car so didn't want to change, hence the spacers. Regular checks from now on but it looks like I will be keeping and eye out for some new wheels.
