Al Massey
Is there any way to tell which diff it is just by looking at it? Ie the code on my car says I have an LSD on my 5 speed NA and I would like to check now I have it off. Cheers
T2 MSW
Dont think so fella, most are based on the code from the car it comes off. Have to take the cover plate off.
Swampy442
No mate, just whip the drain plug out, get a good head torch or similar and have a look inside.
Al Massey
How can you tell from the internals? Cheers for the replies guys
Swampy442
I did exactly the same thing last week mate with a car that supposedly had an LSD, if you turn the prop shaft and see anything like the pic below, its an LSD. There is another way involving turing wheels and other wheels turning or not turning lol, I cant remember which.

If I turn one wheel the other spins in the opposite direction....
Chris Wilson
If it were a none OE plate type diff both wheels would turn in the same direction, if the rear was jacked up, and you rotated one wheel, with the gearbox in neutral. With the pretty useless stock torsen LSD, or an open diff, this is not a true test. You need to whip the cover off the diff assembly and look inside, or use an endoscope. - - - Updated - - - If it were a none OE plate type diff both wheels would turn in the same direction, if the rear was jacked up, and you rotated one wheel, with the gearbox in neutral.
