Jellybean
Just need some Advice Currently have an Aristo diff in the car as the Crown and Pinion or Carrier Bearings went in the Diff casing, she is not as predictable in the wet / dry without the Carbonetic 2 Way diff Option 1 I have sourced a big case TRD Diff with the pumpkin Casing too for 650 euro with warranty, but mileage is unknown, she is getting taken from an Aristo (as far as I know) being broken, The Diff mount bushings need replacing too at roughly 100 euro each so 200 all in, plus the TRD Diff; 850 minus Labour (Worse case 1100 with Labour) Sell my Carbonetic diff and Big Case spec Pumpkin Option 2 Get all new OEM bearings to rebuild my diff casing , roughly 600 euro including the Diff mount bushings and put the Carbonetic LSD back in. (Worse case 900 all in with Labour) My only reservations is the Carbonetic diff needs an oil change every 3000 miles, reason why I was going TRD. But at least with option 2 I will be 100% on the condition of the bearings in the LSD casing. Not too sure what to do! Are the LSD Crown & Pinion / Carrier bearings a common failure and anybody hear of a TRD diff requiring a rebuild? pedrosixfour
I'd probably go with option two. However, I certainly would NOT be paying Toyota for the bearings. The old/damaged/worn bearing you'll remove from you own casing will have a number stamped/etched into each part. This is not a Toyota number, this is a number which identifies the bearing REGARDLESS of manufacturer. It is one of the few items you will ever see that actually adheres to a standardised system. So my advice to you is this: Remove the bearing (cups & cones) from your diff casing take note of the part numbers on all parts and get in touch with someone like E. Fox Engineers, out in Baldonnell business park, and get a price on the bearings you require in a decent make (FAG, SKF & Timken are all good makes). There is a very good chance that you can do something similar with the oil seals. Again, there'll be (usually) a size marked on the seal somewhere. This can be used to order the same seal from the likes of E. Fox's or Abbey Seals in the JFK industrial estate. I can guarantee you that the quality of the parts you get from either of the two options above won't be any less than what Toyota will be supplying you for twice the price. The parts that are specific to the diff, shims, crush tube, etc. you may talk to Toyota about.
Chris Wilson
The problem with transmission bearings in modern cars is they order in such huge quantities thay have one dimension made to a bastard size, so you are stuck with OE parts at inflated prices. You may be lucky, but with gearboxes in particular, most are weird in one dimension.
