Richie1985
Hi guys, I've just been out for the day and on my way home I've lost almost all drive. It feels like the clutch slipping massively and only with about 4k rpm it will "bite" and start to move, leaving me stuck about 2 miles from home. There is a very distinct smell that I would say was gearbox oil (although no signs of it leaking onto the road). The car is an auto with a boostlogic box and after leaving it for 10-15 mins the car started working fine but only got me about another mile before "slipping" again. Any idea what this could be or the best way to get it sorted (car is a daily so need it fixing ASAP) I had only been driving up the motorway and no hard driving so a bit surprised if its overheated. Richie1985
Not been able to check the level, it's currently parked up on a side road in town. I'm hoping it is just low on fluid. What is the best type to use and how much does the box take? I might top it up and see if that makes a difference and then get it into the garage to have the lot changed. Richie1985
Update. The gearbox oil was a little bit low so topped it up but problem is still present. After starting the car it drives fine until I need to stop or put it into reverse. If I turn the engine off and back on it works fine again until stopping/almost stopping. When trying to pull away from some lights it revved upto 4k but only just to say started moving, couldn't go up a small incline. There was also no boost showing on the gauge (boost ok (only took it to - 0.5 bar) when driving) Any suggestions? Still smells of burning gearbox oil. Swampy442
Gearbox filter is clogged. DONT DRIVE IT, the lack of fluid in the box will kill it.
Richie1985
Are you sure it's the filter? It's not engaging gear but if I turn it off and then back on again it will engage. Was thinking it could be a sensor rather than anything mechanical (resetting the reading when ignition is switched off)
Swampy442
Yes, very sure, been there, done it. Its only a 10 minute job to drop the box sump and remove the filter.
Richie1985
Cheers, I'll see if I can get this done on Sunday. Filter and 2L of oil from dealer?
Swampy442
Filters are quite pricey, like 50 quid so Id get the old one out and lots of carb/brake cleaner and give it a proper clean out. Its a very fine mesh filter.
Richie1985
Cheers, I'll give that a go. It's only 2l of oil in the sump though isn't it? Is there a guide anywhere?
Swampy442
Yeah about 2 litres in the sump. What guide do you need? If youre handy with a spanner its just a ring of bolts, sump off and the filter is right in front of you, and 3x10mm bolts to get the filter off. When you drop the sump, youll see this, the big, silver bit is the suction filter. Oh and if you dont have a gasket on the sump, you'll need some oil safe sealant when you re-fit it. Swampy442
Oh, and if you drop your fluid and it looks like this :- Or your sump looks like the ;- You have bigger problems :/
Richie1985
Update, got the use of some ramps today so dropped the sump and have the filter a clean (it's a sealed unit so couldn't clean it too much but got a lot out of it) The oil was minging and even found a screw in the sump! Put the screw back where it should have been and put back together and filled the oil back up. The car is driving a lot better but still slipping when pulling away uphill. I think the next step is to replace the filter and give the box a full flush but unsure how to drain the lot. Any body know the best way and if there maybe another fix?
