simbasupra
Hi My next project will be changing my valve stem oil seals, I have decided i want to take the head off so i can clean parts up at the same time. I just thought i would ask on here if any of you guys would do any other projects at the same time? Thanks
safcdixon
If your stripping it down check when the oil and water pump were last done it will be worth changing both whilst your on with it
Sheefa
I suppose just the usual checks for deterioration on parts, cam bolts, split breather hoses etc. Check dimensions of head and resolve if required (re-shim if neededc). Of course you don't have to do this but it is a good time to check and see if any are out of correct intended specification whilst it is off. simbasupra
Thanks for the replies, i have added them to the list. I was also thinking of putting a new thermostat in. Should i replace with a stock oem one? Or lower temperature one? I'm only running BPU. Cheers
bignum
For the road stock is fine.
Josh
I desperately need to get mine changed. The smoke on startup after a few days of sitting is embarrassing. Also, it's gone through my neighbour's window into the house a couple of times.. Hope they haven't noticed! lol
marc_p
Are you removing the engine? If you are taking the head off you have your work cut out on removing the turbos, manifolds, etc, especially if the engine is left in the bay, to do them with the head on is a fairly straight forward and easy job. All that stuff can easily come off with the head

But yea, just disconnect the pipes, downpipe, etc and the whole lot will come off. Will need some serious strength to lift it off though, need a pair of strong hands to help out anyway. Seen a few pics of people using a crane and lifting the head this way. Saves hassle as the turbos are a real PITA.
Chris Wilson
If you taking the valves out get the guides linered, they WILL be worn, and the seats recut by somone who knows how to do it without pocketing the valve heads. A job like this can get expensive. The joy of 24 valves.... You might consider new valve springs, too.
