Guest 2JZ-GE
Hey guys, sorry in advance if this is in the wrong section So my car has started to make a strange noise at full throttle when warm, it's kind of like a back fire but instead of the usual or expected one loud/high pitched pop it's low like a burble and its constant like 7-10 pops and during this time the car feels like it makes no power. It's a 1996 Supra SZ-R with the 6 speed getrag with 136,000kms Now this started at first as 2-3 pops and always at full throttle but now I notice those low pitched pops during take off AND full throttle when it's the worst. It's not all the time mainly after a little spirited driving and during long drives too (30-40minutes+) when it's not making the noise etc the car runs fine no issues whatsoever. It turns on fine, idles a tiny bit high but I'm guessing that's coz it's due to be serviced.. 800-1000rpm idle usually I've booked in to get it serviced (major servicing, spark plugs, leads, water pump, harmonic balancer, timing belt, fluids etc) this Wednesday but was just hoping I could get some help brain storming what's wrong before I get it done. Leaky injector(s)? Dirty distributor connection ? A mate is convinced it's my diff but the noise sounds like its coming from the exhaust, vacuum leak? Thanks in advance ! Guest Budz86
To me it sounds like a dirty spark plug causing a misfire at high rpm, only doing it when asked to ignite lots of fuel. Spark is just being blown out. Even if it's not, a good service has a high chance of sorting this out - I'd take it for a run when you pick it up and see if it still does it. My money is on plugs though I take it from your name you are NA?
SupraLEDrears
I would look at the spark plugs and the dizzy cap first. My gasket went and the sparks were full of oil and the rotor arm inside my dizzy cap needed replacing too.
Guest Budz86
Oh, and that idle is fine once the car is warm. 1200 on start up, dropping to around 1000 then 700-

Yep the cars currently NA (hope to do a TT swap in the future) Oh, and that idle is fine once the car is warm. 1200 on start up, dropping to around 1000 then 700-800 Yeah my car seems to idle at 1200 all the time , but when the weather is nice the idle drops to 800 as you said but during rain like right now it stays at 1200, odd really! Guest 2JZ-GE
Just a minor update (trying to get that post count up lol) cars in for servicing as we speak Mechanic says the rotor button was ruined, and a lead was a little loose. Hopefully that + brand new set of NGK iridium spark plugs will do the trick
Guest 2JZ-GE
Okay so after driving it hard the last two days the problem is gone, gonna guess it was a combination of the cheap copper spark plugs the previous owner used, the loose lead and the distributor rotor button being stuffed. Thanks for the help guys
