Steve Gee
Hi All, After standing for 36 hours I get a puff of blue smoke out of the exhaust when firing up. It soon goes, but it does look like oil burning. It doesn't happen if the car's only been standing overnight, 10 hours say. Should I be worried? 115K on the clock now!!! Thanks Steve
Terminator
Sounds like VS oil seals getting tired. Not much to worry about AFAIK
richardharmon
I get exactly the same thing, puff of blue smoke then clean, but only if it's been standing. I have been told it's nothing to worry about. My mates STi has doen this from 7,000 miles too!

richardharmon
Flat 4: I assume that's because the oil will seep past the piston rings as they are lying down?
Alex
Probably....maybe too much oil in the sump? I get a light amout of blue smoke if I leave the car for a week before driving it again....
Steve Gee
Thanks Guys, I shall now put my worry beads away again. Certainly the engine, oh what an engine, does not seem to be down on power or have any problems. Thanks again. Happy motoring. Steve
TooColdToDrive
Hey guys, sorry to bring back a really old thread here - messaged Lui about this and he suggested I ask you guys. My car sat for about 1 1/2 weeks in extremely cold temperatures (was in the garage, but non heated), where things dipped down to -57 at one point. After a very rough start, car put out blueish smoke for about 10 seconds, then started with the really white stuff it usually puts out in the cold temperatures. Let it run for 10 minutes, came back out to look at it, it was purring and running normal fumes. Shut it off, turned it back on two minutes later (had someone do this so I could watch the back), and it went straight to normal fumes. I poked around the inside of the muffler with my finger, took some scrapping but I collected some black stuff, looked like oil but very watery, no smell of oil on it though. Put my flat palm against the tip, left a faint black circle, but did not smell of oil either. Same thing I imagine- the valves? Nothing to be worried about though? It's a 93 jspect auto tt by the way. Thanks guys.
Supranature
Running your car at a standstill is a no no my friend. I am sure someone will come along to explain the technicalities. Oh, and to highlight that this is a 6yr old thread. Record? Mind you, at least you done a search:)
Terminator
Minus 57:blink:, what grade oil did you have in it? I am not surprised you got smoke, and a lot of condensation in the exhaust. It is best not to leave it with moisture in the exhaust. The car needs a good run to get the system up to full operational temperature and drying out the pipes. It may be an idea to contact "Oilman" for advice re the grade of oil you need plus any other precautions you should take with such low temperatures

Anyway, yeah, sounds perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, just a bit of oil getting past the valve stem oil seals when the car's been standing cold for hours. Mine has done this for as long as I've owned the car (ie since 2003)
TooColdToDrive
It's running either 5w-30 or 10w-30 oil, which the supra enthusiast and mechanic who imported it put in it to keep it winter-safe. It's the standard performance oil in my province at least (however, I'm thinkin Oilman might have more tips for me ) I run it at a standstill only because there's so much snow outside the front of the car will act like a plow. However, I'm going to risk taking it out in two hours once there's no one on the roads and get it going on the freeway for a good 30 minutes. Thanks for your help guys!
