Chris Bailey
I wanted a standard car, a v8 supra isn't standard, I've done the engine swop thing and again in my experience it causes issues. I'm slightly concerned on your views as a mechanic, no matter how much a car is serviced or "looked" after build quality and design will always be a factor along with luck in most cases. I've had turbos fail, gearboxes/diffs blow, electrical problems the list goes on all of which have nothing to do with how well you service or look ofter them as they were serviced often and looked after. The "old chestnut" you refer to big single vs a standard basic v8 is simple, the v8 is more reliable as it is just that.... Simple, that's not to say its a better engine however, some people prefer power however I Personaly prefer reliability. Yea maybe your right, Maybe most of it may be down to luck, But just because a V8 is simple and it doesnt have a turbo it doesnt mean it wont have other things go wrong. Digsy
Its true that certain engine layouts are easier to design to be inherently stronger than others but its also perfectly possible to make a well engineered or badly engineered engine in any layout. A straight six has a relatively long and twisty, but simple, crankshaft design whereas if you take the same package and re configure it as a 60-degree V6 with even cylinder firing then the crankshaft can easily turn into a horrible spindley mess unless you throw a lot of material at it in the right places. Large displacement cross plane V8s tend to be fitted to cruisers trucks, and exec type cars where good vibration characteristics and low down torque (by virtue of no turbos and the large cylinder displacement) are important, but cross plane V8s have inherently heavy cranktrains and blocks. Again, take the same cylinder geometry and re configure it as a flat plane V8 and the engine will probably shake itself to peices.

bigbloodyturbo
I wouldn't call a v8 more reliable than a straight six, look at ajp v8's, lotus v8's even those old TR stags haha. Between the two i'd rather have a v8 supra than a straight six but thats more due to the way it would deliver power when its boosted, tons of capacity to drive a big turbo with plenty of off boost torque AND the noise is amazing. Mario
This is simply awesome! No other words can describe... Japanese power FTW!!! Here is the build of the engine for their dyno battle supra,

A Supra can be converted to V8 using factory parts and with no modifications other than wiring to get it running.... I certainly had no 'issues'
