That_Supra_Guy
Hi lads, just noticed whilst giving my idle control valve a clean that the area around the valve cover/head seal has a coat of dirty oil (seems reasonably fresh, although its pretty thick, no drips and covered with plenty of dust and usual crap) surrounding the entire head. Would I be right in saying thats the cover seal(s) had it? Or is there something else I need to be worrying about? Its a 93 jap spec NA. I'll fire up some photos if needed. Cheers guys. Kaan W
For what they cost and the time it takes to replace the gaskets its worth doing even if its a small leak. It could have been over tightened at some point or not tightened in the correct pattern. Im sure Whifbitz sells the gaskets seperatly quite cheap. David P
Before tearing it apart try nipping them up first, 7 lbft I believe.

I'll be stealing a torque wrench tomorrow to do just that, I've heard they can be easily overtightened all the same so probably worth a change, its something new to learn atleast. Dnk
The seals go rock hard with age/mileage so for what they cost just replace them.

Yeah I will do, you wouldn't happen to know where to get a hold of a set by chance? Something a toyota dealer could order? I'm new to older cars see :L

Swampy442
What Id do is clean everything up first, and see if anything else leaks out.
Dnk
Yes Toyota can get them no problem and there not that much for genuine parts. It would pay to check if the NA uses the washers with seals fitted to them and if so replace these at the same time.
That_Supra_Guy
Whifbitz as mentioned earlier £40 posted from whifbitz..... surely that's a little steep for two rubber gaskets? or is the £15 shipping a direct from Japan job?

Yeah I'll need to do a little digging on that one, I read another chap discussing the same seals somewhere else on the interweb...pretty sure the pre-vvti ones don't use them though... could be wrong.
