Scooter
Post up a pic of the underside of your actual rad cap...does the rubber base look perished at all? does it have a firm'ish spring when pushed by hand?
Dnk
Just to add before i did anything else i'd fit a new rad cap from Toyota and top up the expansion tank and see if you still have the problem. Does the heater blow out hot air on the max hot setting ?

Does the heater blow out hot air on the max hot setting ? Ok the heaters do blow hot. Can't take pic of cap yet. I just had a block test done and the notes say "Just starting to change fluid colour, possible head gasket fault" Isit stil worth me changing cap/ therm and rad or is this pointless? Thanks
Rummy
For the sake of 130-50 quid for an after market rad and stat I'd say its better than another engine or head refurb if the HG hasn't definitely failed.
Scooter
Billy don't panic or rush anything...... Get a rad cap, the rad caps are not supra specific they are shared with lots of 'normal' Toyotas and a local autofactor will have a good enough one for the time being. Get some coolant that matches what is already in there ie blue or red and fill the expansion tank to the max. Go out for a local drive, a loop that doesn't ever leave you far from home! If the needle rises get home and turn it off and observe the rad and expansion tank. If the cap doesn't fix it then you might have a tiny rad leak etc.....unless someone has driven it for a while with the water temp high then the head gasket should be ok, certainly worth doing the above before chucking it at a garage. Thanks.... I have ordered a rad cap and thermostat from Steve at Oxford Toyota who gave me some good discount for being on here. Any ideas on costs of a radiator for an auto ... Dealers price is 341.58 Not sure what to look for on eBay :/
jimwire
I got an ASI alluminium rad off ebay and it fit really well. Might be worth a look. Is the car auto or manual?
Rummy
I second the fleabay option. 130£ will get you a decent after market (no name) Ali rad. I had no problems with the one I had. gavin.starr
I had a similar issue with mine when i first got mine. It turned out that the rad cap was old and knackered and filled up the expantion tank and then steam from the rad was bubbling up through the expantion tank. I replaced flushed the system replaced my thermostat, and the rad cap and that sorted it out until 2 weeks later the top of my original rad exploded all over my engine bay, was not impressed. So i then ended up buying a koyo rad to replace it with.

Swampy442
Dont worry about rads yet, start cheap and small, cap first.

ashbuster
i had that noise when my rad cap was buggered, letting air in
billy0090
Ok guys I've fitted new rad cap. Still over heats when driven enthusiastically
dan294
Might be worth taking the rad off and flushing it maybe? If it's partially blocked, that won't help.
dan294
Just a thought, and I'm probably miles off, but is your viscous fan working OK?
billy0090
The fans work fine. And I have a rad flush Nd therm renewal booked for Wednesday. The heat rise is pretty sudden driving normally temp gauge in the middle then put my foot down for a mile and you can see the temp gauge getting higher
Rummy
I'm pretty sure a new stat will sort your problem mate.
billy0090
ifit was a stat? the top pipe coming off the radiator would not get hot ?...... when you squeeze that pipe you can feel pressure..... ive been told thats not good ?
monsween
I've had the exact same overheating problem (no bubbling mind you) It started to happen after I fitted a FMIC. New rad and its been fine ever since. I did replace the cap first as well.
