billy0090
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dA401CtJEQ afternoon guys, I have noticed this noise after driving my car ( fast ) is this normal or not? im pretty sure its not. the temperature gauge reads normal ( bang in middle ) when driving normally. but when i put my foot down for any length of time the temp gauge goes way high. ive only had the car a week ( purchased from a private seller ). I made a video of the noise you hear - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dA401CtJEQ any suggestions would be welcome! cheers
Dnk
When its cold take the rad cap off, is the coolant up to the top of the rad and is there any coolant in the expansion tank ? And no it shouldn't do that. Also does your heater blow out nice hot air on max hot setting ? billy0090
ok guys see pictures below, theres nothing in that bottle. ( engine coolant, i assume thats the expansion tank ? i couldnt find another one ! ) and the coolant looks bad! ideas?
Dnk
If the coolant is just rusty water i'd drain and flush out the system, fit a new stat and refill with fresh coolant inc the expansion tank, fit a new rad cap and take it it from there. Fit o/e stat and rad cap It just so happens i have Toyota Coolred engine coolant for sale at a bargin price if you want it. Where in the midlands are you ? billy0090
i am in shrewsbury. isit a big job to do that? and fit a new thermostat?
Dnk
i am in shrewsbury. isit a big job to do that? and fit a new thermostat? No not really. You could try topping up the expansion tank to the max level and fit a new rad cap and see if that fixes your problem. If the rad cap is old this could be your problem Does your heater blow out hot on its max hot setting ? Have a look in the cooling-coolant wsm pdf page CO-14CO.pdf Edited June 2, 2013 by Dnk (see edit history)
billy0090
il try that tomorrow, just to be sure the picture i took of the engine coolant bottle, that is the expansion tank correct?? I really need to get myself a workshop manual lol i would be interested in taking the coolant off you though ? thanks for ur help
Dnk
Is it connected to the radiator just below the rad cap ? it does look like the stock expansion tank. All the Workshop manuals are on the home page on the forum, top left click on repair manuals. If you cant find them pm me your email address and i'll send you all the pdf files i have
billy0090
hey guys took the car to my mechanic friend today! gave me some bad news. he thinks because the temperature only goes up when im booting it ( under pressure ) he thinks its the head gasket. the coolant and everything were all on correct levels and looked ok ( not rusty as first thought ) the pipes also got warm so he doesn't think its the thermostat as it would over heat all the time if it was and wouldn't come down when i came off boost. how much am i looking at to get this repaired?? I only purchased the car last week from a private seller, am i within my rights to ask for my money back? thanks B
Josh42
Where in the West Midlands are you bud? 2JZ's aren't known for cooking HG, I'd be tempted to believe it to be something else. I'd be more than happy to come over and take a look for you.

billy0090
im in the little town of Shrewsbury.... not that far from Stafford. yea if you can help id greatly appreciate it, il PM you.
Rummy
I've had those symptoms on another supra and I changed the rad for an Ali high flow with new stat and it sorted it right out. A quick verification of HG failure is to get a sniff test done.

Rummy
I never knew sniffer dogs could tell whether your car has a faulty headgasket. You can get them to do all sorts with enough rohypnol. Passes the time at weekends
billy0090
chris wilson? where is he? Josh has very kindley said he will come have a look. I am very impressed with the support this forum gives!
Dnk
Get a sniff test done, its a quick and cheap test and should show exhaust gas in the coolant. If it is head gasket failure then you need to get the head checked in case its been seriously overheated, if its warped over 0.1 mm its as good as scrap
