Engine oil question

Hi everyone,

 

I bought my supra in Japan recently and when i checked the engine oil with my Japanese friend the oil was very dirty.

Almost close to black color..

 

So, he had this engine oil that he used for his Bike, so we decided to replace the oil by ourself.

The oil is a 20w50. Its quite different from the 10w30 that is recommended on the engine..

 

I didn't ride my supra since i changed the oil, but do you think there is any risk of damaging the engine ?

Should i change the oil for the recommended numbers or can i stick with the 20w50 ?

I would be embarrassed if i damage my 2jz-gte.

 

Since i am not familiar with engine oil, i looked on the net and made many researches.

I also looked for 2jz-gte oil thread and i didn't see anyone going over 40.

 

50 is used for very hot countries like Africa right ?

But i live in Japan and i have to say that Japan summer is very hot.

 

I really would like to know what you guys think.

Use what's recommended. Personally, wouldn't risk using bike engine oil on a performance car engine. I don't know what the affects could be, but I just wouldn't.

 

sorry, i should have give more precisions in my question.

I didn't use a specific bike engine oil, i think i used a standard engine oil.

 

I am pretty sure that i used this one!

If the temps are hot at the moment then you should be OK, but in cold weather the cold viscosity is too high at 20W you should be using 5 or 10W to give the engine an easier time during warm up when the ambient temps are cold/freezing,

and as said the hot viscosity is OK for ambient temps around 30c but otherwise i would use a W40.

Actually i only use my supra during week end.

And my supra is in a garage that is under the ground (Japanese style :))

 

That mean that when i will start it up, the temperature of the engine and the oil will be quite cold.

I'am afraid that 20w may be indeed too high..

Ok, some report on the 20w50.

 

After driving my car few times, like you guys said, i noticed that my car had difficult time during warm up.

After stalling my engine two times (It was surely because of driving mistake but i am sure that the oil high viscosity didn't help) i decided to change the oil.

 

I went to Autobacs and in the sports oil corner, i saw the Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w40.

The Japanese guy at Autobacs strongly advised to me to not go under 10 and asked me to change for a 10w40.

He said that it could damage the engine to use 5w.

I am not oil specialist at all but, does 5 are 10 that much different in viscosity ?

After looking back for more oils, i didn't found any good 10w40 oil, so i just sticked to the Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w40.

 

I drove the car a little bit and immediately found that the rev was a lot smoother with the 5w40.

Maybe for my next oil, i'll change to a 10w40 fully synthetic to be on the safe side...
