Fly
Thanks guys for helping here. Just fired up again and placed my hand over the screamer and....... Nothing so I'm going to bite the bullet and remove everything today and make sure it's all tight as I can get can it.
mellonman
Start it up again and feel for leaks around the manifold mate, How free does that turbo spin with engine off?
Fly
No leaks, that was an early thought nothing on the wastegate either, trust me I have a burn on my arm to prove it ) I took the turbo oil feed off and found there was a lot of oil stood in the turbo and took a long time to dissipate so I'm leaning on too much oil in the turbo leading to restrictions etc. though tbh I have no clue, just in th middle of stripping it all back to check for leaks / tightness
Fly
Ok...I hate my car right now. Everything has been off today even fitted a different compressor wheel to the t61. There are no leaks anywhere, checked everything was tight, no blow from the screamer or anywhere near the manifold. I increased the idle which seems to have solved the turbo not spinning issue, I think she was idling too low (1000rpm) when cold which I assume means that coupled with cold low viscous oil would put drag on the turbo. However you do notice a marked increase in rpm when the oil warms up. However the stupid flutter noise is still present. I'm ruling out blades caching here as it did it with the turbo not spinning at all. My only last thought is that I may have dropped something when I had the cam covers off but I doubt it very much . mellonman
What oil is it? PVA Glue?! I did think the same thing the oil wont stop it spinning but surely should drain away quicker

Benjy
Then it shouldn't make a difference mate. If it does, i'd say there are turbo bearing issues. My Hilux runs on 10/40 driveway tarmac, and the turbo (CT20) spins as soon as it fires up!
Fly
I am really at the end of my tether with this, tempted to rip it all out and go back to stock and buy a tt. I was guessing from observations with the oil and the spinning as it gets better as it gets hotter.
Noz
If you go TT and get a problem the cost will be a lot more than a XS power turbo. Your pay just as much for second hand GTE bits.
Fly
Don't worrynoz I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. Going to take all the intake and cams off see if I can track the noise down.

Are you sure there are no cracks or anything in the exhaust manifold?

Noz
Is that the song all the NA drivers play to convince themselves there cars are quick? When a manual TT at BPU cost more than an NA-t conversion who cares what stamp is on it
Fly
i am pretty sure my nat six speed has cost less than a 6 speed TT

Fly
Cheers dude, I am getting there. I was going to spend today taking the intake off and cam covers to see if I have something loose in there I'm clutching at straws here. But I really can't bring myself to it. So ile do it tomorrow. Today I am stealing an idea from noz and painting my intake pipes
ballsdeep
Today I am stealing an idea from noz and painting my intake pipes lol I was thinking of doing mine after seeing them on facebook they look awesome!! how is your oil return routed? I remember you saying you was going to try something different to the usual method.
mellonman
Why vencher from the tried and tested route ? You still have nof stated how easy or not you turbo spins with engine off
Fly
Checked the oil return it's not that. The same thing happens when I drain the oil to the floor. My oil drain routes down and round towards the back of the sump and I have a fitting at the top of the sump that drops the oil vertically back into the sump. It's easier to show with pictures

Fly
Sorry mello didn't see your comment. I wanted to try something that allowed the fitting of an oil return with engine and sub frame in that meant I didn't have to drill the sump and not be able to catch all the shards. It seems to work well . Remember just because it's the done way does not mean that it is the best. .... Though it probably is The turbo spins freely with no catching noises seems to take a while to decel and stop, it does not stop abruptly. But then again how long should it spin for when I rotate it hard to quantify really.
Benjy
If it continues spinning after you've rotated it, and there's no play, it's ok. I still maintain that in your video, it sounds like the manifold is blowing its nuts off.
