The-Plethora
I haven't used the car much recently but took it out for a short spin today and started to get a bit of a noise I didn't like the sound of. I am hoping that it's the bearings on the water pump and kept a close eye on the temp gauge as I nursed it home. The car has plenty of oil and coolant in it, transmission oil is topped up and I cannot hear the noise at all when the car is idling so maybe the extra load rpm is worth looking into. I presume it's not the turbo's as these feel fine when giving it a small amount of boost, gearbox has plenty of oil in and I presume wouldn't be a factor if it's in neutral anyway? I have found though that it's juddering a bit to a stop when coming up to junctions although maybe that's sticky calipers when hot. It's hard to pin where the noise is coming from but maybe the air con pump could be a suspect too. I'll probably be leaving this to a garage at the moment but would be good to have some idea of likely cause so I can test / buy bits in advance. I am debating removing the aux belt and pulleys to test but if I can't hear it at idle I am not sure I could spin them fast enough to hear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAR8Vp6fL3s&feature=youtu.be Any ideas mechanical minds ? TheTurtleshead
Take the belt off and run it , if the noise stops then it's definitely something on your aux system. Then wiggle and spin the various different pulleys until you locate it!
Nic
Sounds a little like mine did when the PAS pump bearing went, you can hear it rattling in the background on this vid. Does the sound change when you turn the steering wheel? Edited May 12, 2013 by Nic (see edit history)
The-Plethora
I'll try the steering later nic and see if that makes a different sound. Turtles am I safe running it without the aux belt running even for a short time? I presume no coolant / oild will be getting pumped round the engine whilst its off? I suppsose 10 seconds or so is all I need.
Dnk
You can run it without the aux belt for a few minutes, it doesn't drive the oil pump, just the water pump, power steering pump, alternator and air con
The-Plethora
Just to update this, I was going to have a look at this today but decided to first try the simple things turn off the air conditioning on the dash and she sounds perfect even after being warmed up, turn it on and its back to how it sounds in the video So sounds like I need a new AC pump maybe? Is this just a take the belt off and remove a couple of bolts job or something a lot more involved? new or refurbished price wise ? It's driving my brother to his wedding in 2 weeks so hopefully safe enough to drive with AC switched off as then it doesn't engage? The pulley itself must be ok if it spins without fuss. Hopefully the vid and this thread are useful to someone in the future.
