No Boost in normal and TTC! UPDATE Broken 1st Turbo (WE HAVE BOOST!)

I study at Huddersfield so if you're still struggling I can always pop across and take a look, depending how far out of the centre you are.

How much oil is in your intercooler pipework? In all my time I've never seen a compressor wheel fail on a supra, only the turbine so I'd be very surprised if it let go as they have told you.

Edit: Now I can see the pictures there does seem to be an excessive amount of oil there, enough to say the seals could well be past it. Does the car eject a lot of blue smoke out of the rear?

I am always struggling lol I am not much of a techy and this is the first car I have ever done mechanical work on :S

The intercooler pipe has little oil in it, I can not confirm the smoke as Ive only driven it to the MOT station and no one has checked the rear for smoke (never saw smoke from rear view) The car is in TTC at the moment but I am waiting on hoses which should come tomorrow as mine have split in many places.

I finish work at 415 (officially) and work in Huddersfield not far from Uni so can always pick u up. I would much appreciate you having a look.

Swampy, I have no idea what the PCV valve is but I guess Kirk can show me if he pops over sometime.

Cheers.

Thats is a fair bit of oil, a little misting is normal. I did check when you were parking up in the garage but didn't notice any smoke. It does still have a completely stock exhaust sytem.

Im unsure if this is restrictive enough to mask any turbo seal smoke.

I've certainly seen worse before. Did you bypass the VSV's and try it in TTC? That would tell you straight away if the turbo is knackered.

I have bypassed VSV and its in TTC but split some hoses when putting it back together it wouldnt be a proper test if some hoses are split. They are due to arrive tomorrow.

Is it worth cleaning that oil out though?

made a video of my car in TTC mode free revving up to 3k

Is this sound normal? I have a stock exhaust system and a stock engine...Only one thing to note, in the picture above with the numbers the hose closest to number 10 (or the 1) was disconnected (as its split)

Once my hoses arrive tomorrow I will fit them and take it for a ride.

Ok, going by this whats in this link re: the sequential system, I think it may be the exhaust gas bypass valve. There is no sound of the turbos spinning at all. It's like all the exhaust gas is just bypassing the turbos.

From the link, "Problem 4: I can't get any boost on the first turbo, it oscillates around a low boost pressure.

A rare one this, your IACV is stuck open, and every time turbo #1 makes boost it takes pretty much the easiest way out - via the non-spinning 2nd turbo and back out to the air filter. It's like Problem 2 but happens all the time, not just at the transition point."

I don't think (from my limited knowledge :)) it's the IACV because the turbo is not making any boost in the first place to lose it.

Just my input, I could be completely wrong or it could even be a combination of faults. The car feels and sounds very much like an N/A, ther are no turbo wirring noises what so ever.

Actually they were a few very odd noises but I think they have gone if im correct Naz?

I could understand if it was a boost hose that popped off, but the turbos are not spinning in correlation to the exhaust pressure.

Iky i was reading this thread http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?283424-Problem-with-stock-twins-not-spooling-up-right!!/page3&highlight=boost

Alot of the symptoms sounds like mine.

Check that youtube video Iky, I was flooring the car and there is no power so I dont think it can be compared to an N/A?

Another thing to add, when i got home and popped the bonnet (turned engine off) open I heard a noise, sounded like air being released from the pressure tank, at first I checked the hose that I replaced and all seemed well, it disappeared about 5 mins later. I am going to replace the other two hoses tomorrow.

Ho wierd does that look!

Worth a shot matey. The air leak noise, was it from the black canister on far passenger side? Thats the carbon canister, I think mine sometimes makes a hissing noise as well.

I have checked the hoses and the blue one high lighted above has caved in slightly but I wouldnt of thought this would cause my no boost issue. I will replace both anyway, what do people recommend, obviously the OEM one will eventually cave in, are there silicone ones available? Where can I buy them from? Does anyone know? Ta.

Whilst I have all these pipes off is there any other tests I can run?

All turbo pipes have been removed and the heatshield has been taken off exposing the exhaust stuff.

I'll try to come down this weekend some time to check the exhaust bits what I think it could be. Measure the i.d of the hose and see if a close match is available on ebay. It needs to be the triple ply reinforced type so it doesn't collapse under vaccum. (if it ever sees a vaccum that is)

I must say that is the first time I have ever seen that sort of problem. I think a split pipe is by far the least of your problems here.

I'm very intrigued to find what the problem is on this one. I'll drop you a PM tomorrow morning.

I know split pipes are a common issue, I've dealt with many TT's with such issues but judging by the feedback from iky I think this is something more.

What's the ID of the ribbed hoses you just removed? I have a Meter of black silicone hose, if its the right size I'm happy for bung you a length for a few quid.

Hi mate, its 50mm by 350mm long, I just bought a pair from Paul. Thanks.

Post 22 showing the Oil, I cleaned all this out and then took it for a drive, I noticed when I took everything off there was some oil in the intercooler and there is still oil in this area.

What gasket do I need to replace to stop this ?

Please let me know which part from Post 31 showing the diagram. Thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

My turbos are shot and I have spent a considerable amount of time removing the old turbos...

I am coming very close to taking them off but I have come across an awkward nut and it just does not budge. I have heated it RED hot and tried to turn it with a spanner, there is no way I can get a rachet in there and have the strength to remove it.

I have managed to remove the bottom nut looking at the pic and its just that one remaining, all the other nuts have been removed.

What is not helping me is the spanners that I have, are the halfords pro ones, with the 12 point ends, this has rounded some nuts off. I have searched everywhere for a 14mm spanner with a hex shape to fit the nut but not sure if anyone does them?

Does anyone have any smart ideas?
