No Boost in normal and TTC! UPDATE Broken 1st Turbo (WE HAVE BOOST!)

Hey guys as some of you know my car has been off the road since 2006 and im getting it back up to running condition

I passed the MOT today and took the car for a spin to open her up a bit more as there was this strange turbo noise thing which I thought could be cob webs...after the short trip around town I thought I would check under the hood for leaks etc... so i pop the bonnet and there is tiny hole in a tube and liquid is spraying on the bay! - Water Leak Resolved

Can someone identify what this pipe is and what could be leaking from it? Where could i get a replacement fairly quickly? I would probably replace the hose above too...My guess is that it is coolant! - Water Leak Resolved

Would be nice to bring the car to japfest:D

that pipe comes of the top water neck so it will be coolant, not difficult to replace, just get a matching strength hose and it has 2 clips which you can get to easily. its only a 6 inch or so pipe.

hope this helps

edit; you may have to remove the air intake to make it nice and easy to access the other side of the clip.

Video of the noise when accelerating...sorry but i could not figure out how to turn it to portrait, not sure if youtube even allows that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RaHimkJo30

I did no more than 40 mph and the noise occurs when on gas/acceleration

Its a long video, not sure how but managed to join the same scene twice so skip to the following parts.

1 min

1:57

3 min

4:40

5:26

5:45

any idea what the noise is about? Do I just need a good motorway run? (obv ill fix the leaking hose before I take it for a run)

Sounds like you have a small dog stuck in there! ;)

I don't know what that sound is, but it definitely isn't right!

Listy thats the first thing I did, could not see a dog anywhere! lol

Car has not moved since 2006/used properly, could it just need a thrashing? I dont have any gauges to check if its boosting properly

I'd be checking to see if all the boost pipes are tight and leak free. Sounds like a pin hole in a boost pipe. You haven't had the exhaust off at all have you?

Exhaust has not been touched Ben.

The things I have taken off Ill list below...

Top and Bottom Radiator hoses (both replaced with new from SRD)

New Radiator

Turbo oil return had a leak but was resolved by putting a gasket on

Hmmm. Odd. Sounds similar to exhaust gas seeping between 2 layers of a metal gasket. Had it on a Hilux once and it drove me mad looking for it.

Wouldn't be boosting it all that much til you've found the problem though mate.

yea I wont be boosting it Ben, Iky is going to come around tomorrow and have a quick look, he is alot more technical.

I got a bit of coolant on the alt and the belt (covered with tissue but seeped through) when removing the hoses above:blink:. Is that a major issue?

Hey folks, just an update...On Friday, Iky (another TT owner) came around to check my TT and the strange noise it was making...

We checked the hoses and non appeared to be leaking, so took the car out for a drive...I know its not what people advised but it was part of the diag ;-)

I was slowly building up speed and the car was making the noise as in the video above but eventually it cleared and i just was not getting any boost, got to 70 on the dual :-/ and exceeded past 4000 and no 2nd turbo. Does the 2nd turbo always engage at 4k? Or must the 1st one be working inorder for it to come on?

We came back to my garage and Iky advised me to take the pipes off so we can check the condition of the turbo, so this is what I have done today....

I followed this guide first http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?35926-The-sequential-system&highlight=boost+problem and checked all the pipes, some were cracked but this were in front of the clamp so shouldnt have much effect? I have ordered replacements but whilst I wait for delivery I thought I would check the turbo out...pics below.

I am not a techy so can someone tell me if its fooked and what tests I can run. I had to take the two water pipes off and drain the coolant in order to take the pipe that goes into the turbo...

The turbo started spinning on engine start so it looks to be working...

I did the TTC however in the process of putting things back together I spit some of the old hoses so I will have to wait till my replacement ones arrive now before for testing.

Do you need to cap off the below once you have taken the hoses off?

Hecklers instructions do not mention anything.

I suspect it's just a faulty VSV. Ideally you want to put the pipe work back on and test it in ttc and see if it's boosting properly. If it is then you've found your problem.

You don't have to cap them off but I would just to keep the dirt out of them.

Just out of curiosity where in Yorkshire are you?

I am from Huddersfield mate...not far from Manchester.

I showed the tubby pics to my normal mechanics who are honda boys and have turbo hondas and "know there stuff", there saying my turbo looks fooked and needs replacing...

tbh I would take your guys words over there's since you own these cars.

Even with the fins as they are, is there any risk of them causing issues, or is it just a case of seeing...

I study at Huddersfield so if you're still struggling I can always pop across and take a look, depending how far out of the centre you are.

How much oil is in your intercooler pipework? In all my time I've never seen a compressor wheel fail on a supra, only the turbine so I'd be very surprised if it let go as they have told you.

Edit: Now I can see the pictures there does seem to be an excessive amount of oil there, enough to say the seals could well be past it. Does the car eject a lot of blue smoke out of the rear?
