Prop shaft alignment

Recommended Posts

While fitting my prop shaft, I noticed the rubber doughnut on the back of the prop dit not fit flat to the diff flange, it's only 1 to 1,5 mm off but as far as I could find in the manual it should be nearly flat (less than 0,5 degrees off, see illustration). The angle can be corrected by spacing the centre bearing

Is there anyone here who has experience in doing this, I already ordered a digital angle finder to try and correct the angle, but wondered if and how others did this.

Some usefull info I found on the subject, although not supra speciffic: Driveline 101

I have the spacers that were on the old propshaft, however the alignment still seems off, not really that strange though, I changed the front subframes, gearbox, gearbox mount, prop shaft, diff and rear subframes. Not all central brackets have spacers?, the manual states they can vary from 0 to 8 mm.

I have not worked on a supra that was missing them thus far. Just adjust until you're happy with it. I'd use one of those magnetic angle finders, something like this;

If you don't adjust the prop shaft, what happens? I took mine off when rust proofing my subframes and swapping my engine, and although i have put it back on the way i took it off, i didn't pay much mind to alignment anything. Yet to take it for a proper drive, as i am refurbing the brakes at the moment.

Use the stock spacers (thick washers). Never had an issue. Old Jaguars were a nightmare with propshaft banging when you start off, if not spot on with selective shimming. The MKIV doesn't seem fussy, all the spacers seem the same thickness from the dozens and dozens i have removed and fitted. Doughnut sits clear of diff flange, on the tubes within the doughnut holes.

90201-10123 2mm washer

90201-10125 4mm washer

90201-10127 6mm washer

90201-10128 8,5mm washer

I think they all have the 4 mm washer, I believe mine did but can't check, the heat shield and exhaust are already in the way...

Btw, according to the manual there were cars without the washers, if you are unsure you could measure them, in the end I did check my prop shaft angles with a angle finder, I was very close to the values in the manual.
