daveburwash
I have read quite a lot on here about the Toyota V160 gear oil and bought 2 litres (£40) to change it. We were looking at the oil today and were sure that is was just ATF. When changing the oil I found this Seems strange to me, are toyota really charging £20/litre for ATF? Anyway I am having some sent away to be tested so will let you know. Having said that there was far too much in there and with the fresh fluid the change is much better so I'm happy
Alex
Do not ever go by what is written on the gearbox...I know it's odd but it's true. V160 on the 6-speed Getrag box is the only way to know for sure you have good oil. I had the wrong oil in when I bought my latest Supra...putting in v160 made shifting much easier especially when cold. Some "performance" gearbox oils such as Redline have been known to screw/swell the seals in the gearbox and ruin it. There is an Esso D***** Dextron oil which goes in the R34's getrag box, this is likely to be the same stuff as Toyota have a very big tie up with Esso (look at all their race cars!) but I don't think anyone has proven it. If you are able to get oil tested then I'll find you the part number for the Esso oil and if you can get the 2 checked against each other it would be very very useful. Alex
The esso stuff is Esso ATF D21065 and it is listed on http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/getrag/specs/ Soooo it should be ok... Who wants to try it? On their 4k gearbox
SimonB
There's a sticker on my gearbox saying something like "consult service manual before changing oil" to warn people not to put general ATF in.

Paul
Who wants to try it? On their 4k gearbox That's why I went for V160, is it really worth arsing around to save a couple of quid on gearbox oil, not as if it's changed every six mths as with the engine. Paul Exactly, my box looks like its going to need a rebuild due to incorrect oil being used. Incorrect oil rotted all the seals out (plus a lot more), oil level went low and killed the syncro... PS: Paul, re my other thread about oil leaks, Phoenix really know their stuff And you were right, it was the shifter linkage that was causing the final leak, not the rear seal! Glad you found them OK, Mark and I learned alot about the v160's seals when he did mine three times (twice was FOC !). Strange as we had concentrated on the main seal yet it turned out to be the linkage one, did it as a last resort really but mine is fine now. You gonna get them to do the other gearbox work? Homer
You gonna get them to do the other gearbox work? Yes, no doubt at all. Mark found that the flywheel needs replacing (a consequence of a leaking rear crank seal) and possibly the diff needs a rebuild. Plus a ton of errors corrected which were made by other people who have worked on the car. Need to do a bit of saving first tho!
