Steering Issues

Hi,

My steering wheel (NA facelift) has a bit of up and down play in it (couple of mm)- is this usual due to the tilt facility ?

Also something doesn't feel right when driving it I can't tell what exactly, just that something isn't right.

It's most obvious when reversing out of a parking space and turning the wheel quickly and it feels like there is gravel in the rack - not the best description but I was hoping it might be a known issue.

Thanks

Yes I checked everything when I bought it, it was over filled (right to the top)

I just syphoned some out - I guess changing it is as good a place to start as any.

I've never had a PS problem in 20yrs and 100+ cars and have never changed PS fluid so it'll be a first.

I have tried it in different positions if that's what you mean.

I did search and saw that thread but couldn't quite understand what he meant - perhaps it's obvious once I remove the steering plastics

I saw a mechanic friend today and he thinks it's just the tilt mech (although there is a small amount of play and a small noise from the rack) he thinks it's acceptable - maybe I need to try another supra.

I have also seen many complain the steering is too light and mine's heavy (235/40/17 fitted, 96 facelift) I like it but I wonder if it points to a problem ?

I have also noticed that the ign barrel moves approx 15mm when the steering lock is engaged - it seems to be simply clamped onto the column with the 2 anti tamper bolts.

So I presume they have worked a little loose - so that's another little job - dremel the ends and replace them.

The column doesn't move but I tightened up the 4 bolts anyway.
