R3DG3CKO ROB
Can anyone give me a bit of guidance? I need to wire in my new cigarette lighter so I can charge my phone/gps the stock one on the dash wasn't working and was removed and smoothed over so I thought I'd run it to the arm rest instead. Had the dash off and have found what I think are the original wires (one grey one white) but not sure how to check them? I've got a multi-meter but have never used it and honestly not sure what I need to be looking for. Other question is that the lighter I bought has a led ring to it so I've got another two wires to find I guess?
mattdavies
I would wore the lighter to a battery positive and then the LED ring to the ash try light
scott87
The led ring is a simple live feed, id wire it into something that only comes on when the ignition is on if you even want it... And the black is just the earth. With regards to the original cig lighter wiring ive not unplugged that before..
R3DG3CKO ROB
Ash tray was also removed and smoothed, I forgot about that
scott87
There will be a remote live spare behind the cd player for the led ring.
R3DG3CKO ROB
Would that be the loose red wire with the bullet connector, hanging out the back of the stereo then? I'll have a look and see if that works.

Yer, or at least it was on mine. I used it for a small led on my car before.
R3DG3CKO ROB
Right I really have no idea what wire to look for for the actual lighter, just tested the wires i thought were the ones from the old cigarette lighter one blue/red (live) one white/green (earth?) and the multimetre says 17v so no use I'd guess? Really not that handy with wiring, can someone technical tell me what to look for and how to test the voltage? I'm guessing the wire in the second picture is the one Scott recommended for the LED? listy
There should be a grey plug that will just pop onto the actual lighter spade connectors. Can't help with the led though.
Kaan W
The cigerette lighter should be on the same circuit as the clock, it is a red/blue and white/black wire for power, all the interior ilumination circuit ie the outer ring should be white/green and green/orange. R3DG3CKO ROB
Someone (cough) removed the grey plug that would make my life easy to use the wires for lighting which has now been removed. so need to establish how to wire the lighter up via spade connectors? (been told that should work fine?) but the voltage I'm getting is reading over 17v on the muti-meter? Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, which is a distinct possibility. Kaan W
In your first picture the 2 wires with the grey plug should be for lighting and take the other white connector off and spade connect to power the lighter.
R3DG3CKO ROB
I'll give that a try, cheers. I assume that the center terminal with the bolt is the positive yes?
R3DG3CKO ROB
That works. Does anyone know if I can share the the negative wire I'm using for the lighter for the led as well?
Kaan W
That works. Does anyone know if I can share the the negative wire I'm using for the lighter for the led as well? I would have thought so, I think the reasons there being 2 seperate wires is for different current tolerances. If its the cig lighter wire I would think it would be ok for the illumination. R3DG3CKO ROB
seems to work fine, thanks for all the help everyone. Rob
R3DG3CKO ROB
New problem now - could what I've done have killed the car or is it more likely what I've been doing with the rear lights? Car is completely dead now and won't start
