Need some advice from experts!

Had new clutch fitted last week by my local garage

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200899316077?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Dual Mass Flywheel i have was showing small signs of wear but decided to keep that for now.

Covered around 150miles since then and when under heavy load the clutch will slip and then the usual clutch burning smell is evident.

Just at THOR having some gauges and boost controller installed and Pete has just spoken to me about the clutch saying it doesnt seem right.

Now, ive just contacted the guys who sold me the clutch (who seem to be pretty decent) and asked their opinions as to why this may be happening, and i want as much info as possible before i call the garage tomorrow - the garage who fitted the clutch are known to me, have done plenty of work on my cars before, they arent tuners as such but it was the owner who fitted my clutch.... Also the clutch does seem to bite very high up still.

Any info would be appreciated guys.

Chris

It's worth bedding the clutch in fairly gently for at least 500 miles before you put it under any heavy load. You haven't been going mental with it, have you?! :)

What does seem a little alarming to me is you've managed to buy a complete clutch kit for £165. Could this be the type that Chris Wilson mentions - reground used clutches that are out of tolerance and may never work properly? That may explain the slipping. I doubt it was installed incorrectly as it would be quite difficult to install one of these clutches incorrectly.

Just PMd Mr Wilson for his advice

A few quick points

1) massive clutch slip experienced today when changed from 3rd-4th at about 70mph - like slipped to 7k rpm

2) smell when accelerating mildly

3) small slip experienced tonight when mildly accelerating on 1st turbo at low speed

Worried as hell as I want this sorting -

Is it the clutch?

Could it possible be a mistake from the fitters?

Is it in anyway possibly the flywheel?

There's a small oil leek under the car, unknown location possible rocker cover gasket Etc could oil have got into clutch?

The clutch had since installation juddered slightly on change and the peddle has not been low down to bite it's always been up at the top similar to where it was before under the old clutch.

Thanks guys

Clutch is now knackered. May have had oil contamination. May have been faulty from new, may have been fitted incorrectly, may just be a junk make. Impossible to say without stripping it. What make and model is the clutch? Always fit a new flywheel if in doubt. Always cure any oil leaks that *MAY* get onto the flywheel or clutch. Always check the hydraulics are working correctly, and the mechanics of the linkage are OK.

Please use e-mail, I rarely look at PM's. Takes me all my time to read proper e-mails at the moment ;) See my sig for address. My father in law is terminally ill and I am all over the place this week. Try me anytime during the day, but if I can't speak please forigve me. 07971-952084. This may give a guide re an uprated stock type clutch. It is NOT a drag race clutch, in fact most aftermarket clutches will not tolerate that. If you are into drag race starts you need a specialist product (and deep pockets) ;)

Available now: Uprated MKIV TT clutches.

I use the stock, brand new driven plate, as it is correctly

balanced, doesn't judder and will hold all but mega torque

highly modded engines or cars used for drag racing.

I modify a stock brand new cover to give more clamping force.

The reason I tooled up to do these is some of the aftermarket

US clutches I have fitted SEEM to be built from used cover

assemblies with reground friction surfaces, and a stronger

spring. I have had hellish trouble getting these to fully

release, because due to this seemingly thinner cast iron

friction face, the geometry of the clutch goes to pot, and

being a pull type clutch (the hydraulics pull the bearing

away from the engine, rather than the more normal push type)

it is a lot harder to effect a cure.

For 455 pounds plus VAT , you get a brand new driven

plate, a brand new modded cover, and a brand new release

bearing. I would rather fit myself so any complaints are down

to me, I see a lot of clutches damaged by people without the right gear

(a ramp and transmission jack, plus correct circlip tools and fitment)

or clutches fitted to patently *uggered flywheels. I will do a supply

only if you feel competent to tackle the job or are using a bona fide garage to

fit the clutch

Toyota use a dual mass flywheel (the flywheel is in 2 parts, an inner and

outer assembly, damped in the middle) which is now showing signs

of wear causing a lot of rattle when idling or on very light

throttle openings. For God knows what reason they are charging

about £400 + VAT for a new one, they look more like they should be

over 500 to me, but don't say anything :-) The very similar LUK dual

mass flywheel on Maseratis is nearly £1000 + VAT.... So if the flywheels

old enough or abused enough to be scored it should be replaced.

Fitting by myself will cost £175 + VAT.

Yes Ian it is - bad advice from the company who supplied the clutch im afraid, i called them to check that prior to fitment that their clutch was ok with a dual mass flywheel which mine has and they said yes......

Today its come to light that they admitted they were wrong and they shouldnt have told me to fit the clutch.... they have refunded the clutch amount and also after speaking to the directors of the company agreed to pay half the labour, i pushed for it all but tbh after the hassle i had to get to the bottom of it and get the initial refund etc i just left it at that.

Now no more scrimping etc as ill be getting this sorted and replacing the flywheel.

Im pretty annoyed on a few fronts -

1) My initial clutch was only just starting to slip and i was being prudent as ive been doing the car up

2) I usually research purchases on the net a quick search today for this brand of clutches reveals a string of bad reviews

3) I havent been scrimping on other things but just saw this clutch and kinda didnt do my homework :(

Ah well - live and learn!
