Guest GCTT
I own a 1999 facelift TT which has the Tiptronic gearbox with buttons on the steering wheel. I would like to put a thicker steering wheel on for better feel and grip - is there anything out there that can be put in retaining the airbag and Tiptronic buttons? So far all I have come across are the non airbag after markets wheels for pre facelift cars. Any / all help greatly appreciated! listy
A bit rubbish, but only thing I can think of is a wheel cover.
safcdixon
You could get it recovered/leathered that way you can choose thickness, design etc Probobly cheaper than buying a wheel and boss too
Philly_1 Lex
I have a spare tiptronic wheel as wheel if you want to go that route

Dnk
Take it to a good re trimmer and ask if it can be made thicker by stripping it and re covering
Guest GCTT
Thanks for the advice guys if re-trimming the wheel with thicker leather where do you take it to? I'd love to have something similar to my E46 M3 I had which was amazing Otherwise am looking at a wheel cover I guess which won't look great! Nic
Thanks for the advice guys if re-trimming the wheel with thicker leather where do you take it to? I'd love to have something similar to my E46 M3 I had which was amazing Most re-trimmers can completely reprofile the foam underneath the leather to any shape/diameter you need, try contacting this company. http://royalsteeringwheels.com/ Alternatively you could source a steering wheel from a newer Toyota/Lexus model like these. 2012 Yaris steering wheel Lexus ISF steering wheel
Guest GCTT
Thanks Nic both the Lexus and Rav4 wheels look good thing is can I fit them on and still use the Tiptronic buttons? Herb
@ josh and nic: Does the airbag actually work if I installed a MR2 steering wheel or even one out of a lexus, yaris, etc.? @ josh: does your airbag warning light work as usual? (Goes off after a few seconds?) Thanks, Herbert
Nic
The car I swapped the Yaris steering wheel onto doesn't have airbags. If you fit an MR2 steering wheel I *think* you'll need an adapter harness for the airbag, see this thread http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?271923-My-New-Steering-Wheel-With-A-Unique-Mod-FINALLY-FITTED-29-6&highlight=09082-00760 Edited April 17, 2013 by Nic (see edit history)
ellis
I'm after an IS220 or IS250 steering wheel for mine. Currently have the Celica wheel in mine
Herb
@ Nic: many thanks for your reply!! @ ellis: does that celica wheel work? I think you'll need the airbag adapter for this one too.... But does the srs warning light go off after a few seconds, or does it stay on (error code)? Thanks, Herbert
David P
I'm after an IS220 or IS250 steering wheel for mine. One (minus air-bag) complete with flappy-paddles sold for £32 on ebay a short while ago, in retrospect I should've bought it, but I didn't bid for it because the day before I'd bought just the paddles for about the same. Currently have the Celica wheel in mine. I'll trump you with; Facelift Supra Tiptronic wheel with Celica air-bag centre-boss, (bag removed) Lexus IS250 flappy-paddles, cruise-control, LED change-up light and a TRD horn badge. Eventually It'll be recovered and be thicker wristed, but not until I stop using it like a mobile mechanics van.

Getting the IS220/250 bare wheel is easy enough, it's getting the ruddy centre bit with the airbag that's proving a problem

If you're really brave, I still have the Celica air-bag. Edited April 17, 2013 by David P (see edit history)

Or as David said you could make a centre section if you have the skills, I preferred to keep the air bag working as its not a bad thing to have
Littler
Quick search and this one is available for £30 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Celica-gen7-vvti-steering-wheel-breaking-140-190-vvtli-gen7-air-bag-mr2-/290898143830 And the adapter 09082-00760 for £12 from Toyota and job done, unless you then want to add cruise control
ellis
I can be patient! I can get a wheel easily enough - there's a very nice ISF wheel on ebay but no centre (as usual). Tempted!
David P
Have a poke around on Toyodiy and see if the plastic cover is available as a separate component, the air-bags are probably generic which opens up options without opening your wallet too much.
