IS200 6-speed in supra?

Hi just a quick question can this be done I've been on the hunt for parts today going round the local breakers yards and have found 2 x lexus is200 and 1 x lexus gs300.

* GS300 no engine but auto box and everything else intact.

* IS200 both with engines and gearboxes one manual 6 speed and one auto.

My question is can I use any of these gearboxes in my rolling shell also would it be possible to use the 1g-fe engine out of an IS200. I know what you are going to say this would be very slow however this would give me time and money to save up for a 2jz-gte.

When I initially got my rolling shell I wanted to go down the route of the V8 but after being out in my mates WRX I'm now more favoring a turbo setup.

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks Scott

It isn't real the slow part which would concern me but fitting that engine into the Supra would be a right pita.

It would make sense just to drop the GE lump in there until you can afford to go FI.

With regards to if you can do it, well anything is possible... so you could, but you'll have to work out the pro's and con's.

If cost is a concern then I'd go with what works easily, even more so if you are not carrying out the work yourself.

I'll be doing the work myself so it's not the cost of the labour that concerns me it's the initial money to buy the engine, there always seems to be plenty of engines available down south but I'm up in Edinburgh and then theres the money getting the thing sent up here.

Unfortunatly the engine was already out of the gs300 because as far as I understand this engine is the same as the supra 2jz na. Ive been googling and from what I can work out you can put a 2jz-gte with w58 box in an is200 so why not reverse it. IS200 guts in a supra. I know I probably sound slightly mad but I think if the 1g-fe is rear sumped then this may fit I just can't find enough info on google. Problem here is I'm more of a Honda guy so having to learn all of what you can bolt to what in a Toyota now lol

I agree with the above, if you want a cheap engine to put in it just buy a 2JZGE lump and save yourself the hassle. They pop up on here now and again for £200 or less. Rumour has it some people actually use them as paperweights.

Edit - I missed your reply to Abz sorry.

Gonna do more digging around on google if this 6 speed can go in I might have stumbled across a great way to get cheap 6 speeds lol

Someone has to be the guinea pig

It's not the number of gears which make the 6 speed expensive ;)

I think you guys are correct about the engine though will try and source a cheap supra na lump maybe my is200 idea was a bit mental lol, but do you guys think the gs300 auto box would be a good way forward?

Not looked into the GS300 box but I am fairly sure they are a similar box, though like the GE engines you can pick up the boxes well priced too.

Tbh for the price that you could get a NA auto setup for, there is no point even considering the Lexus stuff.

As Abz said theres other reasons the 6 speed is expensive, mainly because it takes the most power.

So basically get a NA auto setup. These will be dirt cheap and straight fit. Or if you want a manual stretch to a w58 setup for 6-800. The other boxes R154 or V160 will cost 2k minimum for a full conversion.... 6 speeds more like 3k.

What have you got now and what's your budget etc?

Just had a quick look online, looks like you can pick up the IS200 6 speed box for around £100.

Doesn't look they were designed to take power, the BEAM engine IS200 had the Supra W58 box in them which is the 5 speed.

On that basis I would say they aren't designed to take much power.

The Aisin AZ6 is a low torque spec unit from the factory in years past. It was used on the Nissan S15 2000-2002 which had 200ft-lbs of torque. Infact, the unit in the '04 Mazda RX-8 is infamous for 2nd gear blowouts, shiftfork problems, etc. The Mazda engineers reworked the box for 2009. One RaceMechanic posted some of the biggest problems on RX8club. Here
