R3DG3CKO ROB
I was hoping to upgrade my fog light switch, but the connectors are different at the back, can anyone recommend a method to switch the wires over? Currently I have one red one black and one green but have five pins on the back of my new switch. They're both 12v but not sure how to wire it up? listy
Red will be positive, black negative, and I'm guessing green as earth? If the new switch is a toggle/rocker switch, red and black should go to the outside terminals, and I'd put the green in the centre one. (I think)
Kev.O
Does the existing switch have an led to inform you the fog light is on? If this is the case, there will be a permanent positive (possibly only live with the lights are on), a switched positive that goes to the rear fog and an earth to allow the led on the switch to work. R3DG3CKO ROB
The current switch is a rocker - the new one is a latching switch but both should do the same job and illuminate an led to indicate that it's on (i hope) Kev, that sounds about Right I guess for the existing connections and the logic applies to the new switch too then but do I just leave the other two connections free on the new switch then Listy? listy
Yeah just leave them mate. Just avoid the wires bridging just in case.
R3DG3CKO ROB
connectors are much smaller on the new switch, any suggestions on where to get the female receptors from and how to splice onto the wires? I normally grab stuff from maplin but wasn't sure if i could find stuff like this locally? Found these but not sure on sizes etc. Edited March 28, 2013 by R3DG3CKO ROB added link (see edit history)
listy
You should be able to get them from Maplin. Just take the switch with you to verify the size. Or, strip the wire, twist it, feed it through, twist it together, solder and heat shrink it.
Kev.O
I would take a guess and say the end two connectors are for the led and the middle three are common, normally open and normally closed. The permanent pos will need to go on the common connector and the feed to the fog light will need to go on the normally open. You will also need to use a small amount of cable from the normally open and connect it to the positive leg of the led (one of the outer connectors). The earth will need to go on the other outer connector.
R3DG3CKO ROB
right, that gives me enough to start with and make a bit of a mess at least. Really appreciate your help guys, just need to get some tiny tiny spade connectors now. not sure where locally will sell them, I've only ever used maplin online. listy
Motor world does them, not sure if they'd have the right size though. Halfords might. DIY stores maybe?
