Samurai 20V
Hi guys. 1st question; Need some help, I am currently using 10w50 Hks oil in my Bpu. I cannot find any full synthetic 10w50 in South Africa. I can get 10w60 fully synthetic, Shell helix ultra racing. Is there any detriment to changing to this oil? Usage is basically a street car, occasional track use. 2nd question; I have a trd LSD to fit, recommended oil is 85w140. I can get Shell spirax or castrol epx ls oil. Anybody have any experience with these? Thanks in advance.
nige-rz
Can't comment on the diff oil but in my eyes 10w 60 is too much. That's like the stuff the scooby boys run. Go for 10w 40 unless the car lives on the track!
Westy
I just changed oil on my BPU car to 5w40 as recommended by Opie oils.
Tricky-Ricky
I would have said 10W60 is a bit too much, 10W50 if the ambient temps are around 25C but otherwise 10W40, you back from Japan now?
Samurai 20V
Thanks guys. The ambient is quite hot in summer, today was 31deg.very humid as well. Winter is mild, 15deg.. The only 10w40 available is semi synthetic. Would that be ok? 5w40 is available but I am worried it may be thin for summer months? Tricky, yes I am out of Japan, car is running fine so far on low boost. Thanks.
Tyson
The car was designed to run on 10W40 semi syth so it will be fine.

Samurai 20V
Thanks for the replies. Any feedback on the 5w40?

Tricky, yes I am out of Japan, car is running fine so far on low boost. Thanks. I think you will be fine on 5W 40 or 10W40, i was running that in semi synthetic on my big single, in fact i have run a 10W 40 semi on all my cars without any problems, don't worry about the first figure its just the cold viscosity, have you got an oil temp gauge fitted? if so i would see what sort of figures you see during summer, and if more than 115-120c fit an oil cooler. Good to hear your cars running well, bet getting it back from japan wasn't cheap. The car was designed to run on 10W40 semi syth so it will be fine. Actually Toyota specified 5W 30 for the 2JZ. Sted
Tim at Opies Oils did a write up on why 10W60 isn't suitable. Its better than the mobile 1 5w40 that I got from opie oils. I thought my stem seals on there way out.
Kirk
Its better than the mobile 1 5w40 that I got from opie oils. I thought my stem seals on there way out. Havards has been running on super 3000 5w40s for the past year with no issues. Supras are spec'd at 5w30 from factory so if it was a bit smokey running anything thinner than what you currently have I'd say you have weak seals. Thicker oil is only going to mask the issue. Edit: Link to article mentioned by Tyson http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?273699-Oil-Supra-TT-Castrol-EDGE-10W-60&p=3451348&viewfull=1#post3451348 Its completely unnecessary for a bpu in my eyes. Thanks man, I think I will go for the 5W40 since I am using full synthetic in the car. I have an oil temp gauge, max temp has been 110deg, thats with very aggressive driving, usual is just over 100deg. (Its summer now). Did cost a bit to bring it back but less than I expected..
