Supra NA Auto Rattles Heavily In 'Drive' and Idling But Fine in Neutral.

Hey guys,

Been a long time stalker of this page but thought it was about time I signed up and started posting!

I've owned my 1995 NA Supra (Automatic) since September 2012, has 103k's on the clock, 100 percent stock (except for body kit, suspension and wheels). Since purchasing it and driving it around a bit I've noticed that when I pull up at the traffic lights my car will rattle quite heavily. I'm talking the whole dash and steering wheel and sometimes I get a chirpy bird like sound coming from the bonnet . This only happens when it is idling in Drive, when it is in Neutral or Park it is fine and smooth. As soon as I apply any sort of acceleration the rattle disappears automatically. I've done a lot of research on this issue and these are the things I've replaced/tried so far to no avail.

- Replaced air filter, oil filter, engine oil, spark plugs

- Cleaned my Idle Speed Control Box and got told by a mechanic that it was performing as it should

- Took the car to an exhaust shop as I read that it could have been the heat-shield on the first cat causing the noise but the guys said my exhaust was pretty much perfect and had no faults

- Replaced timing belt as per 100km service

The only other things I can think of at this point is it could be the engine mounts or the gearbox? Has anyone else had a similar issue with the auto Supra's and if so how did they fix it?

I appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

(here is a photo of my car for those who are interested on what it looks like)

Cheers

Hey Scott,

Mine still has the stock exhaust, not sure if that means I have the 2nd decat or not? I might try tightening the bolts as well, sounds like a decent idea.

I only really know the basics when it comes to mechanics so I wouldn't know what to check for with the belts, the chirping noise only happens on really hot days or when I've driven the car for longer than 40 minutes. The rattle happens all the time. :(

Does the rattle sound like its coming from in the car as the dash and trim would be my first place to check, every toyota (old toyota) has rattled, thinks its an age thing.

To check the auxilery belt its easy, open the bonnet and its the one connected to the alternator etc, the belt you can physically see. Check for cracks, tears, if it is not seated on a pulley properly and push it down in the point furthest away from two pulleys, if it moves alot, it probably needs some more tention or a new belt.

If your exhaust is completely stock you will have both cats.

Joe - its auto, no clutch my friend. :(

Thanks Scott, I will make sure I check this. So the two cats increase rattle in the car? Would I be better off getting a new exhaust with only one cat? I've looked at some forum posts where they have said aftermarket exhausts on NA supra's don't do much. Haha.

Um no, unless they are fault but then that would be an exhaust rattle.

I mentioned by decat as the exhaust has a lower tone and thus give off more vibration so the interior rattles got more noticeable, but they were there before, they are just worse now!

Decatting an n/a is good for performance and sound, not good for passing emission tests.
