When fitting a single disc clutch which way would you do it. 1) bolt the clutch and pressure plate to the flywheel and then slide the box on. Or 2) slide the pressure plate and clutch onto the gearbox shaft, then slide it all onto the engine and bolt it to the flywheel. (This is how my service manual suggests I do it. Personally I think option 1 would be the easiest way of doing it, but I saw this in the workshop manual and it made me think. Any input would be great. l.chris97 Posted March 1, 2013 Share Posted March 1, 2013 option one mate never fitted a clutch any other way, maybe they might be worried if the clutch disk isn't lined and the input shaft on the gear box might hit the disk and damage it on the way in.... but there could be another reason for it, but i'm not sure what else it might be Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TheTurtleshead Posted March 1, 2013 Share Posted March 1, 2013 Option one can't be done on the supra due to the amount that the release bearing assembly protrudes from the clutch. It means you physically can't get the box into the car and the input shaft into the end of the release bearing when re-fitting the box. It's the long way i'm afraid Hodgykins! pedrosixfour Posted March 1, 2013 Share Posted March 1, 2013 Interesting, I realise that both Hodge and Turtleshead are speaking in terms of the V160/1 with the pull type clutch which is an arrangement I am unfamiliar with. I've changed the clutch in my W58, which is a push type, and I did it using option 1. Thing is I've to fit a clutch to my R154, which is also uses a pull type clutch like the 6 speed, I wonder if option 1 is still available to me because of the smaller dimensions of the 5 speed box or do I need to familiarise myself with option 2.
