r2ck_p Posted February 26, 2013 Share Posted February 26, 2013 (edited) Hopefully you can help, my J-Spec Supra TT has never had a start issue, however last night I parked up waiting for the missus with the engine running as apparently she would be 2mins, anyway 10 mins later I decided to turn the engine off and stay seated in the car as I was still waiting. A few minutes passed and she arrives, at this point the immobiliser light is flashing, I press the button on the key fob to turn it off, it stopped flashing as expected. I turn the keys to start the car but nothing, didn't even make the clicking type noise when the engine is trying to fire up, all dash lights, radio and headlights were working. Tried it several times with no luck. I initially thought it could be the alarm/immobiliser playing up so I got out of the car, turned the alarm on gave it a few minutes, turned the alarm off and got back in. Still it wouldn't start. I then opened the engine bay, looked around for 5 mins couldn't see anything unusual so I tried it again and nothing. Checked it was in Park and not stuck between gears just in case that was preventing it starting, tried and few more times while the bonnet was still up and after a few more attempts she started up fine with no hesitation. Got in the car this morning to drive it to work and it started first time fine. I might be going down the wrong track with this, but is it possible that the starter motor could have overheated as I was sat there for 10mins on idle, preventing the car from re-starting until it had cooled? Sorry for the long story, but wanted to give you every detail so I have a better chance of diagnosing the problem !! scott87 Posted February 26, 2013 Share Posted February 26, 2013 My car didnt start when the immobiliser key fob battery was on the way out! The led on the dash stopped blinking but the car would't start, grabbed the other fob and it was fine. Could be worth a quick check.. r2ck_p Posted February 26, 2013 Author Share Posted February 26, 2013 (edited) Checked a few things tonight, the battery terminals are securely fitted. The earth is connected from the battery. Not removed it to check the connection is good, but looks fine. I did some further tests with it tonight, without the engine running I tried the side lights and head lights. First time I put the side lights on and neither side lit, second time just the P/S side one lit. Headlights were a similar story, P/S light lit and the D/S flickered a bit and went off. So I am guessing a dead/faulty/low battery. When the engine is running the head lights seem fine. The battery has only put in the car in Oct 2011 so would of thought it last a little longer in all honesty. I do short journeys in the car so this could be contributing, I will have to start taking it out for a good blast more often. Its booked it Toyota on Friday for a new fan belt so will get them to check the battery to. Ian C Posted February 27, 2013 Share Posted February 27, 2013 Check you are getting 14.5ish volts across the battery terminal when the engine is running. Anything less can mean a bad alternator. Check for dimly glowing lights on the dash as well, that can indicate an earth fault. The intermittent nature of this makes me suspect it's an earth issue. Toyota did a test on the battery while that had it on thurs said it was fine, cranking speed less then what is should be as should be 620 mine is 330. But battery been on since 2011 and always been fine. Just cleaning the earths up to make sure there is a good contact. Radio Posted March 5, 2013 Share Posted March 5, 2013 You got it Dan......dodgy battery terminals. New ones needed to be crimped on. Bolts will not tighten the connections tight enough even when locked up, their still loose. Get a new battery Rick so the terminals could be a decent size. Smallest battery I have ever seen, might be off a scooter or maybe its just a jap thing. Uk models share the same one as HMS Dauntless (nuke sub. ) Ha!
