I know, I only wanted the power steering pump changed nearby in case the rack had a problem. Should have been a simple job. Problem is the garage is my 'friendly' MOT place. Can get a trailer for £35 and shift it wherever probably SRD but Lee is so busy at he moment!

MOT's available with me too bud. Let me know if you get stuck.

I just had the very same thing happen to me  !

Car starting first time with no probs then one morning I turn the key the starter motor turns but the engine doesn't fire! Definitely fuel in there but nothing happening ..... right pain in the posterior. Car stuck on my driveway and I'm walking to work scratching my head wonder wtf has gone wrong. I'll keep an eye on this thread for sure.

Right. I might be old and a numpty when it comes to mechanics, but I have just arranged for it to go to the only person who has given me an honest service with the vehicle. Lee P it is on its way to you and should be with you late on Thursday, a guy called Sam Wyatt of Elite transport should be bringing it to you! Then we can get to the bottom of the problem!

The Turtleshead was absolutely right!

There is one huge moral to this story.

Don't think a job is that simple that it can't be f*cked up by a mechanic.

Don't try and get it fixed by someone you have only used for MOT's in the past!

Put yourself out and take it to someone you can trust.

Today's timings. 1700. It's just got here!

1738 it's running

Power steering pump is not doing anything!

Lee P and SRD I can only apologise for not getting it to you in the first place

For the info of Konrad and any others coming in to this thread. The car was starting first time every time, but had a power steering issue, which I thought was the pump. I suspected this would be a simple job as someone I know said that they could supply and fit a refurbed one while I waited for about £150. It would have meant quite a drive, so I put it in to a garage near me, that usually do my MOTs. They took the pump off and sent it for refurb. 2 weeks later the pump comes back and is put on the car. They try to start the car, but it won't fire up. The battery discharges in their efforts to start and they use a power pack. Still no starting. Much head rubbing and no start. They were obviously not capable of resolving the problem so I arranged for it to be trailered to SRD. Within 40 mins they had it started. Needed to change plugs and somehow battery which is only 4 months old had become kc*ffed. Lee thought that the garage had been moving it around on short hops as the plugs were completely fouled up. I don't think I will ever establish what caused the non starting in the first place, but even the so called refurbed pump is or working!

Always gotta go back to basics.

I had a garage round here (that the RAC recommended and recovered the car to) tell one of my customers that the reason it had no compression was because the cambelt had snapped. It was simply bore washed because they'd moved it off the driveway to get another car out, when they went back to it, it wouldn't go. I took the belt cover off, (because of said diagnosis - usually would have just asked the customer it they'd moved it 10ft and switched it off) saw the belt intact and thought "maybe if i bury the throttle it'll clear it". Car was running within 2 minutes of my arrival.

Why do people not check this stuff? And how do these people make a living from mechanicing?
