Electrical Problem (indicators & side lights & airbag) HELP!-RESOLVED!

Hi guys, I have a few issues, 1 being my indicators which is driving me nuts!

The following are a list of everything that I can confirm worked before I did the below.

  • Turn signals, these were working as the first mod I did was replace to clear indicators so I checked it. - USED THE HAZARD SO THIS IS NOT CONFIRMED!
  • Airbag light not disappearing on engine start - this has cropped up

Unconfirmed

Side lights - car was trailered from London and I cant really remember if these were working, both sides are DEAD.

Background

I have taken the dashboard out to vinyl the interior and removed all the connectors at the back, clock, radiator, active spoiler, hazzards etc etc

Once I vinyl wrapped it I put everything back together as it was...

Now when I signal, it cycles really fast as per youtube upload... Notice when I signal right it appears slightly slower than the left signal. The hazard light seems to pulse at the correct interval

This video shows all bulbs in working order.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76uYUZKGCMk

I have done the following diag..

  • Replaced all Indicator bulbs, that's front, side and rear also the reverse lights (1 was in bad condition) with new ones - Not resolved the issue
  • Checked all fuses by the driver foot well kick panel to look for breaks (specifically *8 which is turn signal, but just checked them all anyway) - Not resolved.

2nd Problem now is the airbag light stays on when i start the car up :-/ checked the fuse for this and its fine.

3rd Problem is the front side lights do not work, I replaced both bulbs with new ones there also seem to be two wires coming from the side light bulbs which I retro fitted LED to run off and these are working when you turn the side lights on so it is getting current to them. (btw the side lights were not working before I started retro fitting my LED side lights.).

I have checked the looms in the dash and I dont see anything there that I could have disturbed.

Can anyone give me some pointers please I really wanted to get the MOT done on it asap, I need to drive it!! :)

Other Info to note

Car is on treacle charge and I have a Clifford alarm.

Re the indicators - for what it sounds like is a blown bulb (I know) - MAY be worth changing the bulbs for known working ones, I'd also look at changing indicator Relay.

Not sure I understand your 3rd issue

Dude, did you watch the video? :D all the bulbs were working.

May well be the relay. Although not sure if Supras have a seperate hazard relay/flasher unit.

As for the sidelights, you need to get a test light and check for feeds. Check the fuses and make sure there's a live coming out of the switch. If the switch tests ok, it's a case of testing from the bulb holder all the way back to the switch to find out where the live stops if there's no power to the bulb holders.

Bulbs were brand new out of box and the same thing was happening with the previous bulbs, all bulbs are flashing when the hazards and indicators are on, there just really fast when the indiactors are on :-/

Where is the relay for it?

Ben i had one of those screw drivers with the light on the end but I had no clue how to use it. Ill buy a test light or borrow one from work.

Will one of these be ok?

Either of those test lights will be fine.

Put the crocodile clip end on a good earth. Test it on something you know has a live feed. Test the sidelights.

I'll use the multimeter, the guy at work briefly showed me how to use it.

I started by referencing the PDF document attached

I used the multiM on Fuse 8 (7.5amp) *turn signals* and it showed between 11/12V, I then moved onto Fuse 12 (10amp) *tail light, parking and side marker lights* this registered between 12/13V.

I removed the pass side head light to make it easier and take photos.

Pic one shows the side light loom, where there is a red arrow this is the cable (green and black) that I used to connect my LED light and defo is working.

Pic 2 Shows another angle showing the cables all joined together

Ben, on pic 3 would it be a good test to put the red cable from the MultiM into the socket where I pulled the bulb from and to use the negative from the car battery to put my black wire to from the MultiM? I got too cold and Hungry so came back in and just read your reply.

I am getting somewhere with the side lights, looks like they dont have a live feed however what I dont understand is why this would be as the car head light loom should be OEM

Can someone please let me know how my side light loom differs.

The picture below shows the female socket that goes into the male side light socket.

attachment.php?attachmentid=164903&stc=1&d=1361485445

Using a multimetere and putting the red MultiM cable to the red circle highlighted and the black MultiM cable to where the black circle is I was able to get 11/12V. Keeping the red where it is I moved the black MultiM cable to where I have high lighted in white but there was no reading, should I even be getting a reading?

If its like a plug I would expect there to be a live, neutral and a earth...So with this in mind I would imagine the red being live, and black being the neutral...

On the Male Socket end the cable colours are Red, Black and Green (see picture), this corresponds to the following on the female

attachment.php?attachmentid=164904&stc=1&d=1361485445

Male Socket-----------_>Female Socket

Black------------------ >What I circled as Black

Green------------------>What I circled as Red (live)

Red-------------------->What I high lighted with the white arrow

Both the Black and green are cables that were originally taped on the ends and were just hanging there (I used the cables to wire LED side lights to pass my MOT but would like the normal side lights working)

The red from the male is wired to the bulb holder and there is a black cable from the bulb holder going to the outter side of the side light bulb.

attachment.php?attachmentid=164905&stc=1&d=1361485445

What I did to get the side light working was bypass the bulb holder and add a length of cable and wired it into the Green and hey presto it worked.

attachment.php?attachmentid=164906&stc=1&d=1361485445

I'll end up pulling the male RED out of the bulb holder and feeding the green (and getting rid of the temp side LED i wired) but can anyone tell me what they think might of been going on here?

  • 2 weeks later...

From what I remember the 3 way connector is for the front fog as well as the side light. It work appear that you have tapped off the front fogs for the LEDs and I would imagine the fog switch is turned on which is why the LED lights are working on what appears to be 'side lights'.

When you checked for voltage at the thee pin plug, one is a negative/neutral the other two are both positive (fog and side lights). You will need to keep the black in the same position and move the red probe. This will prove whether or not there is voltage when the side lights are on.

Looking at the video again, am I right in saying you are using the pre facelift side light bulbs (with orange bulbs) for the indicators?

If so then this might be why the indicators are flashing too fast. The side light bulb is 5 watt where are the indicator bulb is 21 watt. The difference in the wattage will cause the same effect as a bulb blown. The reason why it doesn't do it with the hazards is because there are 6 bulbs as opposed to 3, therefore stopping the electronics from seeing wattage difference.

I don't know mate. Never removed it.

If it was working before, when you changed the bulbs, are they the correct wattage? The bulbs to fit in the sidelights will be smaller that stock indicator bulbs iirc so may be the wrong wattage.

Looking at what you've said, that's what I would check first.

Also, make sure all the connector plugs in the dash are tight, and the same for the bulbs. A lose bulb, although still working, can cause this, as I had that the other day.

Summarise,

First car mod I did was changing the side indicators for clear ones and orange bulbs, i tested it then and they worked fine

Then after that came out the dashboard for vinyl and when i put it all back together I noticed the quick flash. All connections are properly in...

I replaced all bulbs afterwards but still the same issue...

I need to replace the indicator fuse but I'm having trouble taking it off. :-S
