detination on uk supra

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone just would like to ask if anyone on the forum can help me identify the sound of detination and also if uk cars can have detination problems im running bpu if that helps. Im getting a ticking noise when the engine is hot when a rev the car when stationary or drive in first gear i have posted this up in the past but had no look with it. If it is detination im thinking of doing a complete engine rebuild and maybe going single. Any advise in the wright direction would be appreciated thank you.

i doubt you would be getting det stationary not enough load on the turbos too give a good air flow,

Det does sound like ticking though sort of like small bearings being dropped on a metal sheet ( metal on metal ting)

you have a few options really youi can buy a £10 bore scope of ebay and look, or take it to a tuner that has a rolling road and ask them to do a power run with Det cans should be around £60

are you sure its not a pulley or tensioner

Its really hard to tell you can hear it more when ypu stand next to the drivee door its seems to be coming from underneatj the car but i cannot pinpoint the noise exactly but then if it is detination wouldnt it do it in all gears? Or its traveling quite fast at that point and i cant hear it maybe.the cambelt does need replacing now aswell as all the engine gaskets nothing is leaking apart from worn stem seals so was thinking of doing a complete gasket change i will how ever get a scope just to check down there thanks will post once iv had a butchers at it

I'd leave the engine alone, if nothings leaking why touch it ?

How many miles has it done ?

Get it on a ramp or as said a rolling road to check out the noise your hearing, Dynodaze are

only down the road from you in Hinckley and should be able to sort you out and are very cheap

compared to most

As said before detonation does not normally occur unless the car is under load, if you really think its det then the first thing i would check is the ignition timing

i guess its possible that its gone out enought to give a bit of a ping when pulling away so get a timing light on it and check.

I'd check heatshields. Common for people to have one vibrating and thinking its something much worse. As you go faster, it would go away, as the airflow under the car will hold it up from the exhaust, but at idle/low speed, this won't happen, so it will vibrate against the exhaust.

Had this on mine, was such a relief. Fixed with a metal clamp to stop it rattling. Also heard of people removing them (although I guess if cat are still in its best to have them)

Also had a rattle once that was a stone that found a home in a small shelf under the car and would rattle on idle. Hope it's something simple

Its done 105k

Well as a guide for you my UK tt has done 136,000 miles on original

turbos and all i've replaced as far as gaskets are concerned are the stem

seals as i started getting the tell tale puff of blue smoke on start up and

the cam cover seals due to one of them leaking.

It would be wise to check the crank pulley or change it as these

can fail at this age mileage and can cause other damage when they go.

Replace with genuine o/e pulley, i think SRD on here sell them for less

than you will get from Toyota, Whifbitz also sell them.

The coil pack connectors go brittle and fall apart so worth changing

those as their approx £40 to do all six.

I would also have a close look under the car at the brake and fuel

lines especially around the rear end.

If they haven't been touched a close inspection of the brake

calipers with the pads removed so you can see the outer seals

could save you a chunk of cash in the future.

I'd strongly recommend cleaning them with brake cleaner and fit

new outer seals.

Seal kits for front and rear would cost approx £100 but you get all

the seals in this, not sure if you can just buy the outer dirt seals.

Might pay you to give CW a call on here as he is pretty good at

getting bits like this :)
