Jake
. . . or are they? I have just stripped down the turbos from my blown engine. (When I say 'stripped down' I mean unbolted them from the cast iron turbine outlet manifold thing, not actually stripped the turbos themselves.) I was expecting to see damaged blades on the hot side but actually the turbine wheels look to be in perfect condition. Same with the impeller blades on the compressor side. Does this mean they probably didn't need changing? It would be an unexpected bonus if it meant I had a spare set of 36,000 miles turbos. I might even stick 'em on my smokey old RZ if you guys think they're probably ok.
Guest Terry S
shaft movement?
Jake
None 'in and out', a millimeter or two from side to side - same as the 'new' ones I replaced them with. I hope that's how they're suposed to be.
Scarface GTti
If there`s any thrust movement (forwards and backwards) they`re trollied.

Jake
That would be nice. I wonder if I can get them checked somehow. (Other than putting them on and seeing )

Miguel
If all the above is ok and there are no show of oil weapage on the seals ..then they sound OK ..realy hard to diagnose without seeing them in the flesh .
Jake
I think oil weapage would be difficult to diagnose because every single internal part was drenched in oil from when the engine went pop. The intake was full of oil, the intercooler was full of oil, the IC piping, the exhaust, you get the idea.

dangerous brain
Roy had the ones on my car taken off and bench tested when he had that smoke problem (the one that turned out to be an overfilled auto box). I can have a look through the receipts and see who did them if you like. And dood I had a set of turbo's you could have had if I'd have seen your post in time
CJ
I recently dealt with a company in Christchurch called Turbo Dynamics. They were very good and very quick too. I am sure they can test them for you.

Jake
Cheers CJ, I might give them a ring. Thanks anyway Bry. Was there any oil when she blewNot quite sure what you mean Terry. When the engine blew up there was a massive cloud of oil smoke but no smoke before that point.

Chris Wilson
The only ways to test a used turbo for seal wear is either strip it and look / measure, or bang it on an engine and run it. Gotta be teted hot with the real life pressure variations across it, or a phsical examination, in other words.
