Oil filter housing on an N/A

I presume the difference is the 2jz ge doesn't have pipes for cooling connected to the housing and the 2jz gte does ? Well mine is an N/A and doesn't seem to have them, but looks like there are huge size allen key "studs" in it and it looks as though one may be leaking ......can I take this out and threadlock it ?

The NA doesn't have anything between the filter and block at all.

 

- The N/A has an oil filter housing which is the part with the 'studs' in as you described Trebor. This is bolted to the block and in turn, the Filter attaches to this.

Yes, is there is a leak coming from one of these blanking 'plugs' then you could remove it clean it up & refit with a oil resistant sealant to ensure no leaks could arise from there if this is where the leak is coming from.

Worth checking all around that area to make sure its not oil that has dribbled into the top of the plug from anywhere else.

Well, blow me! I never knew that :-) You can't really see it from above the engne bay so I assumed I was screwing the filter direct to the block.

I'm pretty sure that mine doesn't look like that , maybe the housing that you have shown is further up but I'm sure the part I can see looks like a sandwich plate with "fittings" for "hoses/pipes" which aren't being used and yes from what I can remember it does look as though one of the "blanking studs" is seeping ..........I will investigate further and try to get a better look .....when it stops raining :( ....now I know what I'm looking or that is .

Hmm sounds odd.

 

That pic i put above is actually of the "bottom" of the housing, the top looks like this - ignore the bit with the pipes coming off of it.. (note the locations for 'fittings' as you describe above):

Then this is an aftermarket oil filter sandwhich plate. Most likely fitted between the housing above and the oil filter.

 

 

Best bet would be, when you are in the engine bay having a look, take a photo and put it up. :)

Ah yes thats it, its the larger one that seems to be weeping, maybe some ptfe tape to seal ? Do yo know if oil will spurt out when I undo it or should I drain it....drop the filter off first ?

Im pretty sure there is a oil resistant version of ptfe tape which is probably a better one to use. PTFE tape can break up when threaded in and you dont want that end up in your oil.

 

You shoudln't need to drain the oil. Just ensure you work on the car after its sat overnight (so the oil has returned to the sump) then you will be ok to remove it. There 'may' be a little oil come out, but it wont "spray" or "spurt" out or anything (just have a rag handy in your other hand for any weeping :) ).

- You shoudln't need to remove the filter either as far as removing that bolt goes. Though may be easier from an access point without the filter on.

What exactly are those 2 Allen studs for on the filter housing (pic above) and as one of mine looks like its weeping (big one).....am I ok to tighten it right up .....not tried it yet but it does look as though its "out" quite a few turns .....prob a silly question but I don't want it to stem the flow through my filter .

Would imagine they are just take off's (which the N/A dosnt use).

Wouldn't be any problem tightening it up dude. No real flow there since they don't lead to anything on the N/A :thumbs:

Just changed my oil again and tried to examine it further and the larger "allen stud" is def "out" by 3 or 4 threads and then upon further inspection I find that it also seems to be weeping from the join area where the housing meets the block :( ....is there also a rubber seal at this point too the same as where the filter screws on or a gasket/sealant ? Also ....is the big bolt (looks like 24 or 25mm) on the housing the bolt that holds it to the block as I notice in the picture above that there are other holes for bolts moulded in the housing ......Should I replace the whole thing ?

It may just need nipping up but yes, there is a seal behind the housing:

The allen key blanks are just for items used on other models (this part fits several other Toyotas)

Thanks for the info and the diagram dude, once I get something big enough to fit the bolt I'll take it all of and check it out :)
