letmeshowyou
Hi All, So, I had the car double decatted at Whifbitz on Friday, to bring the car up to full BPU (TT Auto), and since leaving Paul's, the car has developed a really annoying squeal just as it comes in to positive boost, which starts at 0, and goes away again by the time it's reached about 0.2-0.3. Anyone any suggestions on what this might be? A few of the bluewater lot came out in the car Friday night, and I'd initially come to the conclusion that it was the fan belt (it sounds like a belt slip squeal), however the noise is still present having changed this for a new one. Darren had a bit more dis-assembled than originally intended due to a stud snapping on the downpipe, however it sounds more like a rotational squeal than a loose heatshield. There was an initial suggestion that it might be a turbo on it's way out, but I'm not convinced on this for the following reasons: 1) it wasn't doing it before 2) the noise goes away above about 0.3bar 3) I'd imagine the turbo to be spinning at quite reasonable RPM's as it approaches positive boost, and yet the noise isn't present before 4) the squeal doesn't seem as high pitched as I'd expect it to be assuming high turbo RPM's at the boost threshold 5) it pulls very, very well now I did consider converting to TTC temporarily to see if it went away; does this seem like a good idea to anyone else? Tricky-Ricky
I had similar noise in TTC mode and it turned out to be the read valve in the turbo pipework.
letmeshowyou
ah, interesting. Is this known by any other name? (or could you point me in the right direction by any chance please?)
jcbt
Adi I may be totally off course but I had a similar sound which later turned out to be a faulty alternator - maybe worth a look.
Abz
I had a similar issue and it turned out to be one of the pipes on the FMIC wasn't 100% tight, after I clamped it together properly it went away. Not sure if you are running a FMIC?
listy
Could also be the crank pulley. I'd tippex test it to be sure
letmeshowyou
*goes off to read up on tippex test* Stock smic Abz. John; hadn't thought of that. Just seems odd it was fine before!
Littler
I was also going to suggest the crank pulley, the tipex test is putting a tipex line across the 2 parts of the pulley, start the engine let it run, when you come to check it if the lines have moved your crank pulley is on the way out. letmeshowyou
Oh, meant to say... No noise at all if revved from idle... Thanks Adam, worth a go just in case I suppose!
Littler
I doubt it will be the crank pulley but it is worth a check It will most likely be something daft and simple
Swampy442
Squeal on boost = leak in a pipe from the turbos to the manifold, check all the clamps, and check them well. The reed valve, from experience is more honking noise when you rev the engine in neutral.
Guest Budz86
Not sure on this Adi but watching with interest in case it gives me ideas for what my squeak is

Pig
Squeal on boost = leak in a pipe from the turbos to the manifold, check all the clamps, and check them well. . pop over at the weekend if you want a hand finding it. I have a compressor, maybe we can blow some air in to try and find it?

Guigsy
Squeal on boost = leak in a pipe from the turbos to the manifold, check all the clamps, and check them well. Check the rivets in your floor are not loose.

letmeshowyou
I'm edging towards the boost leak theory now. Thanks for the suggestions guys
Littler
Was it there on the way home yesterday?? ...Also did you notice the T*** of a ST behind me when we split off?
letmeshowyou
Yeah; still there. And yes; That was weird. He followed me out of McDonalds. Then disappeared, then re-appeared behind you! I had an even worse experience with a fiesta on the M11. I have no idea what he was trying to do, all because I wouldn't speed, and/or undertake him! Littler
That guy just kept going round a roundabout until I got to it (you had already passed over it) then he saw me followed about an inch away from my bumper! But made sure he knew the difference between a Fiesta ST and a Supra TT BPU, let him get really close on the M69 slip road then my foot was flat to the floor... he was a spec in the mirror Then just to add to his insult I'd slowed off and he started catching up, his mate waved and mouthed bye, so I went yeah see ya, foot to the floor again and shot past him Childish i know lol Edited February 7, 2013 by Littler (see edit history)
