k2supra
Going to sort this tomorrow, so I will update what the problem was. Any takers for what the cause? Occurs only in low idle after engine is warmed up, car is TT Auto. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=373516682746951 Edit: Let me provide further amplifying information. Cambelt was changed 8K miles ago 7 years ago by first owner, while having the radiator flushed after startup, heard a low rattle noise originating from the cambelt cover area. This only occurs after engine is warmed up and when switching from high idle to low idle, lasting through low idle. After getting home the car was parked for about a week and after picking up some food on a short trip, noticed while in the drive that the rattle had become more prominent. So far I have checked tension on belts while off, all pulleys gears checked for damage, took sparkplug cover off to check for interference, but no luck as to the actual source of the noise as of yet. Update: Problem solved, It turned out to be the serpentine (aux) belt tensioner, after replacing the tensioner the car is running nice and smooth. Scooter
get it warm so its doing it, shut it down, remove the aux belt, run it very briefly, check for the noise, if it's gone, turn it off and have a grope of each pulley and check they are running smooth. Alternator bearing is a possibility
David P
Blind guessing, I'd be suspecting the water-pump.

listy
You checked crank pulley? Heard of the tipex test? Crank pulley squeaks rather than rattles. I'm going with........can you get a video of the noise?
k2supra
Not heard of the tipex, but looked it up so I will try the tipex test, It's been hard to narrow down from where exactly its coming from. Initial thought was bad aux belt tensioner.

scott87
I retract my alternator comment after seeing the video. It sounds like grinding or a bearing type noise from the video, although videos can make it sound completely different than 'real' life.
David P
Run it without the auxilary belt for a few seconds and see if you can hear it then or not.
