Brakes clunking

Just started happening, when im coming to a stop from slow speeds and normally when turning, sometimes my brakes make a weird cluck/click sound sort of like metal knocking against the brake pedal if this makes any sense (sorry for the poor explanation) only one knock/click when brake is applied not continual clunking over and over

My car is an auto btw and brakes are still stock shitey j-spec brakes

anyone got any ideas??

Is it just under braking? Is it at only on certain lock and not in a straight line? Have you gone up over a kerb at speed?

Sorry for all the questions, just I kerbed mine and put a slight dent in the inner alloy (the lip folded outwards slightly) and this caused a clunking on turn catching the shock as it went past. Also if you have had your wheels balanced and they havent put them on (weights) correctly they could also catch the shock when rotating past it on lock.

since changing my pads mine does the exact same thing, i put CW fast road pads in on my UK brakes but left out the metal bit on the back of the pad. Apparently you get better feedback (?) but cos the pads are a little loose (we're only talking by 1 - 2mm) they rattle about a bit and "clonk" together when braking (only hear it when going slowly with windows undone.

I don't think its dangerous (?), just annoying.

see if the pads move by poking them with your finger (only held in place by the 2 pins so could slide up and down a tiny tiny bit, if they don't move then that rules out your brakes being the problem.

Just noticed mine doing this when reversing yesterday, I wonder if it's just the bolts that need tightening.

Same here, mine does this specially when reversing under full steering lock. Cant see this having anything to do with the brakes....must be something else......maybe some worn out bushes in some of the suspension components....

Mines doing this as well under slow braking - 5mph or less... Just called 'Sussex Performance Centre' and they said that I would most probably need a shim kit, so have booked it in and will let you know.

btw, I've just fitted the UK Brake kit - so it is definately to do with them...

Hi Gary.

I have a thread somewhere in this section recently about the same subject, I bought a car with UK brakes I referbed them and put on new discs I was very carefull to make sure everything went back on and in the same way and afterwards I noticed this knocking at slow speeds. I cant say that it wasnt there before because of the time of year and having windows open or closed. I did get advice that it is always best to change the pads at the same time as the discs so I did, knocking still there. Let me know if the kit made any differance, by the way my knock is just at the rear.

Cheers.

Bob.

  • 1 month later...

i have owned my supra for 9 years now and it has done this knock noise from the day i brought it. I have changed everything over the years and fully stripped and rebuilt the suspension a few times. How ever i have now cured the problem since i fitted brand new u.k spec callipers and disks last month. The car has less than 50k miles on it and only about 20k when i brought it so must be some fault from new with standard callipers (j-spec)

Strong possibility its your pads!!!

I had the same thing, mine clunked loads. Especially noticable whist parking ie moving forward and back and also on lock when pulling up in the drive etc. At the time I had rubbish EBC green pads in them.

Changed the pads.....no more clunking :)

I reckon......

The pads have tabs on each end which slot into the caliper, and there are spring steel spacers which fit between the caliper and the pad. if you reverse with the brakes on, then move forward and apply the brakes, and here's a clunk, then it's probably the pads moving slightly because those spring steel spacers are missing (or not springy enough).

A clunk when reversing on full lock could well be the lower control arm bushes.
