Tuoppi
You can also test if it's mechanical fault in transmission or electrical fault in transmission control circuit with this test (copy&paste from service manual): MANUAL SHIFTING TEST HINT: With this test, it can be determined whether the trouble is within the electrical circuit or is a mechanical problem in the transmission. 1. DISCONNECT SOLENOID WIRE FROM TRANSMISSION 2. INSPECT MANUAL DRIVING OPERATION Check that the shift and gear positions correspond with the table below. Shifter position Gear position D O/D 2 3rd L 1st R Reverse P Pawl lock HINT: If the L, 2 and D position gear positions are difficult to distinguish, do the following road test. • While driving, shift through the L, 2 and D positions. Check that the gear change corresponds to the shift position. If any abnormality is found in the above test, the problem is in the transmission itself. 3. CONNECT SOLENOID WIRE 4. CANCEL OUT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE Is your car GE or GTE? This test is for a340e transmission with 2jz-gte, not sure if it works with 2jz-ge engines...? 2jzEd
It's GTE. I'll check the radiator and disconnect the solenoid wire and test. I'll also bypass the cooler, it's the beginning of the rainy season i can barely get 5 mins under the car without drowning. What's the price on that ecu you have David? David P
That's the first time you've mentioned GTE and the ECU I have is GE, excuse my assumption, my other replies are good for both.
2jzEd
Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. My problems are now fixed. How? I did the wire splice. Pink wire into blue/red wire and voila. Never gave me a problem in the 15 mile run i just did. Reverse picks up instantly, shifts 1-4 and downshifts are spot on and were never sloppy etc.

Replacing the odometer will also cure this if you want to return the wiring to stock.
2jzEd
Maybe my combination of new filter, solenoids and a lot of fresh type 4 atf helped as well. I bought 24 quarts of atf and i have 6 left
2jzEd
And i'm back. No problems with reverse, just shifting in forward gears now. Disconnected the solenoid wiring and the trans passes the diagnostic test. This must be the ecu like tuoppi experienced so i'm shopping for a replacement ecu. Anyone has a spare jdm 2jz-gte auto ecu obd1 lying around?
2jzEd
Opened my ecu and found very early stages of resistor leaking. one resistor and 2 caps leaking. Cleaned em up and so far so good. Sent the ecu to aaron at driftmotion in the u.s. I'll see if replacing the caps and resistors fixes the random shift dropouts. Update: Ecu arrived car won't even start lol. 2jzEd
Should be receiving an ecu from a forum member soon. Fingers X:ecstatic: Installed the ecu i received, no more hard starts or shifting problems. Car runs like it should.
