Cipriani
Hi guys, I'm looking to get my first supra in about 6-8 weeks but wanted to ask the question how badly do they rust? I can't say I've seen many with rusty panels but from owning an EK Civic I know all about underbody corrosion any personal experiences would be helpful. Cheers guys! Josh42
Generally MKIV's don't suffer from rust as they use a mix of aluminium panels and a low carbon steel in the body. I have however seen some with corrosion around the rear wiper/tailgates, although this seems rare. Under body's are commonly under sealed but just check and it should be fine. Mine is a '93 and has zero rust:)
Westy
Like any car they will rust on Britains roads if not cleaned and fully undersealed upon arrival in the country...even then maticulous cleaning and not driving it on salted winter roads are the only ways to prevent it. UK cars are notorious for being very poor underneath purely because they have spent more years in this climate. But to fully answer your question they are not rust boxes by any stretch of the imagination.
Ian C
Any car can rust if mistreated, but otherwise Supras only have a couple of known areas. Aerotops can rust at the top of the windscreen, and all can rust at the bottom corner of the rear window where the rubber sealing strip can rub. Cipriani
Thanks guys that's good to know, the reason I'm more concerned than normal is what I've just been through with my daily Honda! See for yourselves
spikedjack
Go for a low miler fresh import if your bank balance allows it, underseal on arrival and jobs a good en' My 1999 tt6 looks better underneath than most cars still in their warranty period because of this
Cipriani
I'm waiting on an offshore pay off from shell so ill see what I can afford I'm so bad at saving lol! I'm probably looking at a car with around 70k, but I do have the facility to underseal it myself which is a bonus
Havard
Get a fresh import. My Supra is better underneath that my 10 plate Audi A4. I never drive it on salted roads or in the wet if I can help it. I see a lot of cars that are in poor condition underneath. It's rarely the panels of floor pan but the suspension arms etc. H. jonc
As Havard said really, A fresh import undersealed is a good place to start. Mine was imported 3 years ago and under sealed in this country on arrival. The MOT tester who does all my cars always comments on how much better both of my Sups are underneath compared to most newish cars having their first or second MOT's. the Jap cars have not been subject to our salted roads over their life time but a UK TT6 is always the must have for some. As other have said the tailgate around the glass is a favourite area, aerotop edges and I have seen door bottoms starting to go on the outside bottom edge where the hinges have dropped slightly and the door bottoms rub on aftermarket side skirts. Also brake pipe lines have been mentioned on older cars as the years pile on. Maybe worth a sticky as these cars get older to see what other members have seen.
