supra_ufo
I just want some advice/pointers on how to proceed with it, I want to at least diag the leak myself and if I can, fix myself Just waiting on some lights so I can actually jack the car and investigate (who knows when they will turn up!) How the leak came about is unknown, I do know that the water pump was changed but this is defo oil. (check signature for car history) I have made a video and uploaded on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJw5OUKzFVI thanks...
-Welsh-Stealth-
First thing I'd do, is remove that engine under tray. Try to find roughly where that leak is. Clean the area to see if it leaks again. To be sure you had the right area/seal/gasket. It looks like it could be the rear crankshaft seal to me, but it could just be oil sitting on the undertray finding its way to the floor at the back of the under tray. bradleyh_15
Rear main crank seal? But can't really tell from your video sorry

Scooter
From above and on the passenger side can you shine a torch down the side of the engine and see oil on that side of the block/subframe? (I can't see from the video easily if the oil is dripping nearer the passenger side of the car or drivers side)
Scooter
I'm hoping for you it's the oil pressure sensor as that's a cheap fix.........and can hurl out oil at that rate (can a rear crank seal leak that badly at idle?)
listy
I'd check the sump plug first. Mine did this and it was because the sump plug wasn't properly tightened after I did the oil pump. If not, I'd say rear seal like the others, but again its hard to tell from the video. Does it drip when just sitting there? Or only on idle? Do you not have a torch? supra_ufo
From above and on the passenger side can you shine a torch down the side of the engine and see oil on that side of the block/subframe? (I can't see from the video easily if the oil is dripping nearer the passenger side of the car or drivers side) Done this and can not see anything from the pass side or the driver side however it appears its coming from directly beneath the block I'd check the sump plug first. Does it drip when just sitting there? Or only on idle? Do you not have a torch? On idle it drips alot, with the engine off it drips, I checked yesterday and it was dripping every 10 seconds or so (maybe because there is no oil left but ill check to level today). I need another jack to get the front end up properly, Ill take that shield off and will have a better look. As for torch, I dont want to mess around with a pocket one, borrowed a light from a guy from work but dont want oil on it so Ordered a flood light from ebay which is taking forever to come! Hopefully should arrive today..
Geo
First off, get 4 bits of wood, 1.5ich thick. drive onto the first two bits of wood, then position the other two bits at the wheels, then drive onto them. Boom! Instant being able to get under the car with a Jack. Turn off Engine. pull off undertray, and wipe up all the oil you can see, leave it for an hour, then go back under and wipe up oil again. Once happy you have got everything cleaned up. Start car and use a torch and check to see where its coming from?? My money is on a stuffed oil filter. Put a clear bag over the light then oil won't get on it As geo said though, once its up, get the undertray off, clean up as best you can, then go back a while later and do it again. Sometimes leaks are hard to find, so get as high up the block as you can when cleaning, as it may be coming from higher up, and trickling down. ashbuster
my leak turned out to be the oil filter too, mine dripped slight less than that but it was the build up on the engine tray that it was dripping from with the engine running. i bought a oil pressure sensor too just incase but never had to fit it

Cheers Geo I needed this lol I can get under the car I just need to use a jack on the other side (i only have 1 trolley jack) but I do have a long thick plank of wood that used to be a shelf, ill chop it up into 4 pieces that will give me some decent height. Managed to get some overalls from work, so i'm slowly getting prepared for it....

Good point but I gave his light back today and my flipping light still hasn't arrived yet!
Tricky-Ricky
Pull the timing belt top cover, and if there is oil around the inside of that and on the belt and pulleys, it will be the front main seal.
supra_ufo
finally got around to doing this... My light still hasn't come !! but managed to acquire this beef cake light shown in pic ;-) Please see attachments. I have never seen a supra engine so would appreciate if you guys could identify the components. The silver filter looking thing was spewing oil (what is located above it that could be leaking oil? The turbos?)
marc_p
You photo's make it hard to see where the issue is, I can see the alternator but don't know what direction you are coming from, however, it appears that it is turbo side and too far across to be front main seal, but a turbo shouldn't really leak when the engine is off(and with it on it would smoke big time with a leak like that). Littler
It looks like it could be something to do with the turbo oil returns? But can't tell really by the pics
supra_ufo
sorry lads ill pull the DSLR out, the point and shoot was just convenient I have added another pic to show you what angle I was taking pictures from (my mate then got under and start firing away) Edited January 6, 2013 by supra_ufo (see edit history)
Tricky-Ricky
Yes looking at your pics, it could well be a split in the turbo oil return, or the feed has come loose or eve fractured the feed pipe/s.
Benjy
Turbo feed or return, OR possibly the cam cover, but you'd be able to see it on the top of the manifold.

From under the car it would be difficult to get to this, do i have to check/replace this from the top? Also would i need to drain the car of oil before to stop it coming out when this is taken off (providing its the problem)
Scooter
The oil return is shown clearly in the 2nd pic below, two pipes into one into a ali section and through the sump. From your previous photos I think there is evidence of oil up higher on the silver cylinder with rod thingy! so I would remove the main rubber intake pipe between the airbox and the aluminium top part of the sequential system and then the alloy turbo cover/shield (just the two clearly visible nuts to undo I think - spray them liberally with penetrating fluid as they can be easy to shear/round as they are often rusty) as this should make looking at the turbo feed/drains easier and hopefully give you something to take more pics of. If it's an oily mess then I would clean/degrease it and possibly even run it for a SHORT time with no air filter to spot the actual source Edited January 6, 2013 by Scooter (see edit history)
