Battery Terminals

So my battery has decided it's had enough and will no longer hold a charge.

I went to Halfords to replace it with the recommended HCB005. However, the terminals are too small on my car and wont fit over the terminals on the battery.

The had terminals at Halfords to replace my smaller ones, but the positive one is different from the negative, and the guy said he couldn't change it.

They didn't have a smaller battery, so he put mine back and jump started me so I could get home (I had to jump it to get to Halfords!).

What are my options? Can I get UK spec terminals to replace them? Are they easy to swap?

My car is out of commission over the Christmas period now, as no where will be open until the new year I bet! So BPU will have to wait :(

Not sure on the terminals but i bought my battery from Toyota

way cheaper than Halfords were selling them for.

I think in Halfords it was over £80 and from Toyota just over £40

but this was a little while ago

I'd try a good local motor factors, there's plenty in the West Mids :)

Europarts have the correct one and you wont need to change the terminals, and if you buy it online and add BATT20 (I think, check this though as it was a couple of weeks ago) at the checkout you get 20% off and it comes in delivered at just under £50 with a 3 year warranty. Although be careful as the Bosch one with 4 years warranty which their website lists as for a Mkiv isnt! In fact its about big enough to start one of Ed's model coptors and must be for a Honda CRX or something, its tiny! I ordered one, it came the next day and was like a torch battery, but called them, took it to my local branch for an exchange and the "Lion power" (I am sure it's a household brand in North Korea) was in stock and fitted perfectly. But they do have batteries with both large and small terminals in stock, you just need to make sure you get someone there who is prepared to look for you.

Will motor factors be open tomorrow? And what spec was the battery you got from Toyota? This one was a calcium battery, apparently better at cold starts, and had a 4 year warranty, the price tag was £96 though!! Steep.

+1

Both my terminals are cracked and need replacing as there loose around the battery terminals and theres not enough cable to cut them off and solder new ones on. I probably will have to change the whole lead with new terminals soldered on.

That's what the guy said to me, said it would be a garage job to replace the wire. Ball ache and costly I bet.

Not really. Negative is easy enough and positive is just 2 cables, one to the starter and one to the fuse box (the easiest one).

I have the same battery in my car. I have used Halford batteries for years in my cars.

1. Because they have brilliant no quibble guarantees on batteries.

2. Because I get Trade price.

Halfords do have the correct terminals and they are dead easy to change

For the Positive I used this one

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_753219_langId_-1_categoryId_255205

and the negative I used this one

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_753029_langId_-1_categoryId_255205

All in all 10 minutes work at most

I have a J-Spec TT and run an HCB005 - had the same dilemma with terminals. Got mine from Toyota - they DO have both types. My garage got both types in for me and I just bought the correct 2. Might have the receipt with part numbers on somewhere. But Toyota DO have them for the smaller terminalled J-Spec.

Thanks for the info guys. Just got a pic of the terminals:

The positive does look pretty hardcore, not sure if the Halfords terminal would fit. Would I be best to get them from Toyota? Usually I ask them for an exploded diagram and point out the part I need. Only problem is they wont be open until tomorrow (if they're open tomorrow) and will be closed all over Christmas probably. My dad has offered to take me to Mid West to see if they have a smaller battery. I may be best to do this due to the time of year.

If they can't help, then I will have to wait and get terminals from Toyota and if you can get me a discount on a battery Jack I'm sure there'll be a pint in it for you ;)

Good to hear as I am thinking of changing ours before DB13. It is ok but my CTEK charger is warning me that the battery is slighlty sulphated. For £50 - 60 it isn't worth messing about.

Just had a look at my receipt from Eurocarparts: I ended up with a Lion 005 battery with a 3 year warranty for £43.95. The part number was 444770051 and they had two variants, one with normal full size terminals and the other with the smaller type, although it was only the guy in the branch who knew this. That's less than £15 a year. I know Eurocarparts get a bad write up and they do get stuff wrong, but for an over the counter service they are pretty good.

Also worth checking your terminals too, on the GFs scooby, the live has a sleeve affair fitted that can be removed and a large post battery used. Although, saying that, my terminals are identical as the ones you have posted the pic of.
